Positive: Well located, a few meters from the station,the place has a lot of different onsen, the one outside was my favorite. Also they have cold plunge and sauna. The room was spacious and beautiful. I would definitely come back here.
Negative: Upon check in was no available time for the restaurant so the first night we ate somewhere else. The second night we ate there but we didn’t like the food much.

Positive: Stayed here for access to Kamikochi National Park. It was a nice and unique experience but not worth the very high price charged. Next time would stay inside Kamikochi or otherwise just bus in from Takayama.
Negative: Breakfast and dinner was interesting but small serving size. FYI no English menu, no coffee at breakfast, no ability to swap dishes etc. The town is essentially a bus station with a few hotels surrounding it.

Positive: I loved the integration of the hot springs with the hotel. We got a room with our own hot spring tub that we called a flower pot. The atmosphere was really relaxed with everyone encouraged to wear the cotton yukatas provided when walking around. They also provided extra amenities in the lobby area like snacks and sake tastings. One afternoon we saw they offered marshmallows to roast on a fire pit outside. And if you’re hungry at 10pm, you can get complimentary soup.
Negative: Our room’s location was a long walk from the lobby, up and down a couple staircases. We also should have signed up for the dinner in advance. It was difficult to signup at checkin since they had limited seating and there aren’t many local restaurants in town.

Positive: The property was beautiful and the onsens were amazing!
Negative: They didn’t serve vegetarian meals while they did tell me in advance. Maybe they could make some arrangements in the future

Negative: Hirayu is very small and only has 3 restaurants, of which only one is really good. If you're ok with that, it's a great location from where to start mountain tours. Busses go everywhere, but the schedules are light, you need to plan ahead.
