Positive: We loved our stay. It's the most magical location and the owners made things very clear even though we met no one physically at all throughout our stay. Everything is well explained and you can comfortably get by. The views are breathtaking and it's one of our most memorable stays in Japan.

Negative: The water heater has an issue - we tried all instructions but it seems like the person showering last will get ice for a bath. That was unpleasant to be on my period with shampoo in my hair and suddenly no hot water. We had to use the kettle to survive the ice water.

Positive: The location is perfect for those who are on their Kumano Kodo journey. Parking is right across the street. It is walking distance to Kumano Hongu Taisha/Otorii/Heritage Center, and the bus stop. The breakfast and dinner arrangements are perfect. The villa is very clean and spacious with views of the Otorii. Most importantly, the hosts Tomo and Amy are most gracious and they really went above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable as possible.

Negative: Nothing, it was perfect.

Positive: In the center of the small town of Hongu and convenient to the shrine and Kumono Kodo trail. Very clean with a well stocked kitchen and an excellent washing machine.

Negative: The beds are basically single memory foam beds in the futon style. Not bad but if you are used to a spring mattress they take some getting used to

Positive: It was beautiful - much more stylish and luxurious than expected. The bedroom looks out over the Grand Gate of the Hongu Taisha. In all respects a remarkable stay. Tomo and Amy of Cafe Sabo Sei went to extraodinary lengths to provide us with a delicious breakfast - big enough to fill our Bento boxes for the days hike. We highly recommend it.

Positive: The location was exceptional—just 10 minutes from the Kumano Kodo trail, which made it incredibly convenient. The whole house was clean, well-stocked, and check-in was easy and straightforward. I do have to say, I believe Japanese people must have stronger constitutions than I do—the house was quite chilly when we visited in January. There were two heaters, one in the kitchen and one in the bedroom, but the rest of the property was fairly cold. Still, overall it was a comfortable and well-organized place in a fantastic location.
