Positive: It was very old school like out of a film. The view from my room was excellent and it was a cosey place. The owner suggested I go his friend restaurant and the food there was excellent

Positive: The owners were very hospitable and helpful. The dinner was delicious, exactly what we needed after a day of hiking. They prepared a breakfast to go and a bento lunch for us to take early the next morning on departure. He even made us coffee early in the morning to get us started on the right foot!! We went to the outdoor onsen across the road which was super fun. I would highly recommend staying here.

Negative: Honestly it was all great. If I'm being very picky, I could hear what sounded like a generator from the back bedroom, but nothing a pair of ear plugs couldn't help with!

Summary: Wonderful, welcoming stay with delicious food.

Positive: One of our best experiences in Japan! The family who runs the place is absolutely lovely, the owner gave us tips for hiking the Kumano Kodo and about the onsen.

Negative: Just know to expect a 2 star hotel with shared bathrooms and the shower is in the private onsen (we didn't come in high season so it was free when we needed it), the private onsen is great and clean:)

Positive: The place is clean and cozy, satisfies every need a hiker may have. A natural hot spring just at the door, providing an incredibly unique experience of soaking in the wonder of nature while steps away from your base. The host is very helpful and offered some extra help regarding my luggage shuttle which I was struggling to sort out. He speaks fluent English.

Negative: There is no nearby eatery during the day. If you arrive at noon you may struggle to find food and shelter.

Summary: Helpful and comfortable stay before embarking on tough hiking.

Positive: 10/10 location right next to Kawayu onsen. Probably one of the best onsens I've been to, espicially after a 12 hour day of hiking. Really delicious and filling dinner. I thought I didn't like hambagu until I ate here. The staff are very kind and provide an excellent service. The only reason I don't give it an absolute 10/10 is because the room felt a little basic. But to be clear, they provide all of the amentities and level of comfort and cleanliness you would expect.

Positive: This was our favourite place to stay in Japan. Location was perfect to do some day hikes on the Kumano Kodo. End the day with a swim in the river or soaking in the public hot springs.

Negative: Location. This place was unbeatable. Scenic views and a perfect place to finish our hikes

Positive: We booked this place in a last minute attempt to hike some of the Kumano Kodo. Booking individual accommodations along the trail turned out to be mission impossible, so we decided to stay here and do day trips. Couldn't be happier with this decision. The hosts here are the loveliest people, the location is great and the inn itself has got a special charm to it. Great (vegetarian) breakfast too. It was easy enough to reach directly from Koyasan (bus stop basically in front of the building) and the day trips we did were hiking back from Koguchi to the inn, and Hongu Taisha Mae - Hosshinmon-oji - Yunomine Onsen and back. Both very easily doable but taking the bus in the morning. Then when you return from the hike you can enjoy the river either hot or cold. Magical place!

Positive: A wonderful and cozy inn, run by a cute Japanese family. They will give you floating tubes, shovels, and water shoes for the hot spring river in front of the inn. They made us breakfast and set it out with a nice note for us to take with us on our early morning hike. Be sure to book dinner with the inn because there are only 2 other restaurants nearby. I highly recommend staying here for a cute and cozy mountain experience!

Negative: This is more of a personal preference, but Japanese pillows make my neck sore!
