Positive: We had the most wonderful time at SOLA Guest House. The room was spacious, clean and very quiet, and the host was delightful. She prepared an amazing vegan dinner and breakfast for us, told us all about the ingredients, many which were new to us. She was attentive and kind and couldn’t have been more gracious. She even drove and hosted us on a delightful outing.

Summary: Wonderful accommodations, host and meals. We left feeling like we made a new friend in Japan!

Positive: Mandy, our host, cooked us a delicious shabu shabu dinner, and a wonderful breakfast and prepared a bag of snacks for the next leg of our Kumano Kodo pilgrimage. It was a bit rainy on the morning of our departure, so Mandy kindly drove us down to the bus station, so that we could continue our journey without being soaking wet. My husband, son and I have nothing but good things to stay about Mandy. She is a wonderful host and we felt like we were a part of her family. My son took two years of Japanese in college and was able to converse with Mandy, but she also went out of her way (using ChatGPT) to try to converse with us in English. She was so very kind. We highly recommend her guest house for those who are traveling on the Kumano Kodo. If we are ever back in Hongu, we'll stay with Mandy! :-)

Positive: Very homely feeling during our stay in Hongu. Mandy not only made us feel welcome but looked after and took us around as if we were family. She also went out of her way to organise a taxi to find us when we got lost during our hike - without her I am not sure what would've happened. Both home prepped meals were amazing, and the acupuncture service was extremely professional. We really enjoyed this authentic Japanese homestay experience and hope to be back soon!

Positive: My husband and I had a wonderful time visiting Sola House. We were hiking the Kumano Kodo and this was a great stop with a view of the Tori shrine right next to the Hongu Taisha Shrine. Our host was incredible from the moment we booked Mandy San was asking us about our stay and how she could make things more comfortable for us and if there was any struggles we had. She was able to arrange luggage shuttle for all of our destinations for the entire trip. Mandy picked us up and drove us to the Hot Springs nearby where she showed us around and we got to boil eggs in the Hot Springs. She also took us for a scenic drive since the cherry blossoms were in full bloom. Mandy also provided us with a great dinner shabu shabu and it was so delicious. Mandy was very welcoming, hospitable and cared for all our needs. Her place was comfortable in a traditional Japanese home. I can’t wait to stay here again, thank you so much, Mandy San. 😁

Positive: If you’re looking for an exceptional traditional Japanese guesthouse, look no further. SOLA was by far the best place we stayed in Japan, and the highlight of our time on the Kumano Kodo. Mandy, had opened the guesthouse only 1 week prior to our stay, but she’s so organized you’d never know. Upon our arrival, she asked if we wanted to go to an onsen near by, which after a long day of hiking was a must. She drove us there herself and then helped us get checked in. That evening she made us Shabu Shabu for dinner, with many of the ingredients coming from her own garden! The house is maybe a 5 min walk to the bus station and very conveniently located for anyone doing the Kumano Kodo. Mandy is the real highlight of the experience though. She is so gracious and kind, we felt like family. She’s also an acupuncturist, which we didn’t have time to experience but wish we had. I can’t say enough good things about this place. Thank you for an incredible stay, Mandy!
