Featuring a hot spring bath and a terrace, Nozaru is a 7-minute drive from Yudanaka Station. It offers Japanese-style rooms, free WiFi at the lobby and a games room. Drinks vending machines and charged parking are on-site. This nonsmoking guest house offers private rooms as well as shared dormitory rooms, all with a tatami (woven-straw) floor, a low kotatsu leg-warming table and traditional futon bedding. A shared fridge and a washbasin are provided, and guests sleep in traditional futon bedding on the floor. Toilets and bathing facilities are shared. Toothbrushes, towels and yukata can be provided for an additional fee. Guests at Nozaru can unwind free of charge in the spacious public hot spring bath that is provided for each gender. The property has a shared kitchen with a microwave, an electric stove and condiments. Local beer and shochu liquor are available. Guest house Nozaru is only an 8-minute drive from the Jigokudani Monkey Park and a 35-minute drive from Shiga Kogen’s Ichinose Yamanokami ski area. We have multiple parking options at various prices to suit your budget and needs. We have limited parking at the hostel, during busy periods (often Saturdays and holidays) parking at the hostel costs 1000 yen. There is also the Shibu public parking for 800 yen and the Kutsuno parking for 500 yen just a short walk fron the hostel. We do not take reservations for parking, this depends on the availability on the day.

Positive: The location is nice. The men's onsen is really nice. The lady in the front is pleasant. The room was also nice and roomy.

Negative: You do not get access to the rest of the onsens in the town if you stay here. The woman's onsen in comparison to the men's is awful. Barely any room. It was like a small hole you could barely fit a few people (according to my gf). She was really upset about the quality of it and that she couldn't use the other ones in the area. It seemed like it was built as an after thought and was not a good place to relax after a long day. In comparison the mens indoor onsen was large and the outdoor one had nice landscaping. The room was also not ready when I arrived and had to wait until they cleaned it. Arrived a few hours after check in. Food options are slim at night. Make sure you bring cash as many restaurants don't take card and the single ATM in town is closed at night.

Summary: Ok if you just need to place to crash and not interested in the onsens

Positive: Location was great, in proximity to the snow monkeys and the bus stop to shiga kogen. Very large bedroom with toilet. Enjoyed the onsen in the hostel, there is an inside one and an outside one each for men and women. Washing machine available which was really handy. More bedding provided if needed.

Negative: Communal kitchen area could be cleaned, was a bit dirty and needs more utensils; mugs, cutlery, bowls etc. If you stay here you cannot access the 9 special onsens, you need to stay at a local ryokan. You need to rent towels, or bring your own. No ski drying area so we just dried stuff in the bedroom. A few power cuts whilst we were here but the staff were helpful in trying to get it fixed.

Positive: Great location, nice staff. The rooms were nice but could have been cleaner (according to Japanese standards) We can see it's a hotel with a lot of potential, the bath were great also ! I don't know why this hotel has such bad rating. Let's say that I would recommend for people who travel cheap and are not fancy ! Keep in mind that it's a traditional hotel there's no AC, nor heating so the room will be cold if you come during winter ! But you'll have a kotatsu (table with covers and a heater) to keep you warm. There's toilets in the room so very convenient.

Negative: Too bad the yukata and towels were not included ! Could be cleaner (we had dust in a corner of the room, nothing dramatic)

Positive: The hostel is traditional ryokan which I really liked, it has separate indoor onsen and small outdoor bath. The owner is very friendly. I’m a remote worker and internet worked really well. Close walk or a bus ride to both Monkey Park and the station.

Negative: The property is kind of dirty, could be cleaner for sure. Although the bath area was clean. My room had some dead bugs which made me uncomfortable. You can really hear other people talking in your room.

Summary: Overall in my opinion good value for that money.

Positive: Very good with onsen at the hostel. The hostel do not have access to the nine onsens, but the onsen at the hostel was all we needed.

Summary: Shibu Onsen was an interesting, litle town. Small, local cafes, narrow streets and snow monkeys.
