This house was designed by Dr Mark Dewsbury, Centre for Sustainable Architecture, University of Tasmania. Mark has designed a house that, on the edge of a World Heritage National Park, aims to capture Tasmania's alpine heartland.
The house is a highly efficient solar passive design, capturing the warmth from the sun and releasing it at night. There is also an air-based heat pump that heats the concrete slab of the house. Insulation is extensive with double glazing throughout.
The 100 acres that the house is on was clear-felled 30 years before purchase and now, 50 years on, the forest is thriving. The house footprint is just 86 square metres yet while compact the design feels spacious.
Cradle Cave features
The house design was inspired by the curved seed pods of native hakea plants. High expansive windows provide extensive views of alpine vegetation creating a sense of being part of the incredible Tasmania mountain high country. While sitting in the warmth of the house you can look out at snow-covered trees, feeling cocooned and protected from the elements.
Various native animals can be spotted day and night with an extensive array of birds, the occasional wombat, possums, paddy melons and wallabies. This is an ideal location for a romantic weekend, family gathering or simply time-out from a busy lifestyle.

Summary: This is a beautiful light filled home situated in a lush woodland that's full of bird life. While there we saw many small birds in the trees, but they were a bit far away even with binoculars. A padmelon and wallaby came to visit a couple of times. The enormous windows made it easy to watch wildlife and it did not feel like a cave! It was easy to cool down the place by opening the windows and doors (which were screened to keep bugs out). Kitchen facilities were good. We cooked breakfast and dinner each day and had no problem finding what we need.There were some things that dampened out enthusiasm for this place. The first was that someone entered the place without notifying us to take out the trash and replace the towels. Normally we'd be fine with that except there was no notice they would be doing this. The second was that we had a question regarding the water supply, but never heard back from the host. Third, while there is a nice trail on the property, we were led to believe that this trail was at least partially a boardwalk based on listing photos (the photos were actually of the ones at Cradle Mountain, but there was no indication of that).

Summary: We spent 5 nights at Cradle Cave. The house is cosy and warm with everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. It was only 15 min drive to Cradle Mountain/st Claire National Park where we spent our days exploring. We woke up on our last morning to a magical white winter wonderland. We highly recommend the Cradle Cave.
