Positive: READ THE DESCRIPTION!!! My friend and I didn't realize that the ONLY shower was a gender segregated public bath. The description says they don't allow tattoos, but we are both visibly tattooed and no one said anything about it (but got some weird looks from other patrons). The staff was very very friendly but didn't speak any English. Very central location with great retaurants and bars nearby. Overall, a good stay for people who know some basic Japanese and are cool with a public shower.

Positive: The facility was centrally located. The owners and staff were very accommodating. We were able to communicate adequately even though they didn't speak English and we didn't speak Japanese. The onsens were super clean and the water was toasty. We were impressed with our experience and would not hesitate to stay at the Takaraya again if we ever return to Kotohira.

Summary: Wonderful onsen hotel with conscientious owners and staff!
