Positive: The quality of breakfast is better than dinner in terms of quality and range of food provided.

Negative: As an elderly couple, have to walk up and down many staircases to go between the room and the mainfacilities (recpetion, restaurant, lounge, public spa).

Summary: Have to ensure the location of the room you reserved if you have difficulty in mobility.

Positive: Kotohira Kadan has a lot of potential. It has a good bath and sprawling location with good views (for those who have rooms overlooking the valley). The special single bunglows looked great as well.

Negative: I thought the service was inconsistent. There were moments that were reminiscent of a high-end ryokan and others that seemed completely out of place. It seems like there were a lot of staff who were in process of training or something. I appreciate their effort but it is noticeable that they're training / junior staff.

Summary: A solid 3/5 at the price of a 4/5

Positive: Best night sleep we had in Japan. Kaiseki dinner meal was magnificent. Breakfast was even better. Onsen was good. Great spot to explore Kompira-san. Bonus: Staff freely offered to drop us off at the train station.

Negative: Nothing really, but a minor one would be better English signage/map for trail to Kompira-san.

Summary: Spoil yourself and splurge at this incredible ryokan
