Positive: Although the facilities are basic the host and his family go out of their way to make sure that you are well looked after. We visited in December when the nights were cool but they will light a roaring fire in your bedroom to keep you warm. Meals are in a cosy kitchen/dining room cooked by the hosts aunts - it feels a like a home stay and you are encouraged to try lots of things. It was all very friendly - at one point the aunts cooked us some Tomales and wouldn’t accept any payment. The hotel is a little out of the way but the host is very flexible in arranging transfers and a variety of trips that both let you try the local big attractions as well as getting you acquainted with the Tarahumara local culture in a non touristy way. He is a very serious trail/ultra marathon runner who knows his way around the Barrancas very well so can guide you on excellent walks to the canyon rim with fantastic viewpoints well off the tourist trail. The host also speaks excellent English. There is a large and well stocked supermarket across the road which was very useful for snacks and drinks to have back in your room.

Negative: The water pressure in the showers was a little hit and miss - but we usually managed to get a hot shower eventually.

Summary: Non touristy and friendly stay in the Sierra Tarahumara

Positive: Small family run hotel with 5 rooms near the Entroncque (road junction) for turn off to village of Areponapuchi, the nearest village to Divisadero train station (El Chepe train). Good mini supermarket right across the road from the hotel, open 7 days, approx. 9AM - 9PM. It's a 20 min walk down to Areponapuchi. From there, access walking trails next to the school that will take you around the rim of the canyon to the Adventure Park (maps.me is useful). Good wifi at the hotel. Breakfast and other meals available on request.

Positive: Beautiful room with a great view of a canyon and as clean as can be. Andres and his wife were exceptional hosts. They are locals and you could not get better information regarding the area, what to do, recommendations and to top it off Andres is also a tour guide. He picked us up at the train station when we arrived. His wife is an amazing cook and made us breakfast and dinner during our stay. I plan to return in the future and without a question I will be staying here again. They went above and beyond and we could not be happier with how we were received and treated.

Negative: Everything was perfect. No complaints.

Summary: Wonderful, beyond expectations and will be back!
