About this space
If you like walking, or staying snug with a wood burner in beautiful countryside, this is your retreat! Underfloor heating, 3 comfy double bedrooms & amazing views to Wild Boar Fell & the famous Settle-Carlisle railway line.
Our nearest neighbours are 2 fields away. Walk from the door, in any direction, watch ponies, hares & sheep. Try ghyll-scrambling or kayaking, or star gaze - no light pollution. Market town & train station 1 mile. Gastro pubs, castles & river swimming. We use Eco-boiler.
The space
The Hayloft is an upside-down house, with 2 of the double bedrooms on the ground floor in order to take full advantage of the amazing views from the kitchen/sitting room. The bedrooms are spacious, comfortable and thoughtfully furnished. The third double bedroom is in the loft, reached by a steep staircase (like on a boat). It has a balcony overlooking the open plan sitting room. There is a large wood-burning stove, a 32 inch Smart TV and underfloor heating throughout the property.
Outside, you can walk for miles from the front door. Climb to the top of Birkett Knot to see the full sweep of Mallerstang valley below. Sit in the large window and watch hares gallop across the meadow. Pick herbs from the herb garden opposite your front door. Or visit some of the beautiful stately homes close by: Dalemain, Acorn Bank, Lowther Castle....
Or head to Beatrix Potter's house, take a steamer across Ullswater lake, try tasty ice cream or visit the first Quaker meeting house at Briggflatts.
Guest access
You have your own front door, and outside space with table and chairs. You're welcome to use our open-sided Shed with brazier - ideal for al fresco barbecues! There's a picnic table, rope swing, table tennis
and trampoline. You can walk in all directions from the house. Wild Boar Fell is about a mile away, a spectacular climb. There are some great gastro pubs close by.
When our hens are laying, we will provide you with some delicious, yellow-yolked free range fresh eggs, and you can pick fresh herbs from the walled garden opposite your front door.
Other things to note
WiFi is super fast fibre optic connection.
The kitchen is small for 6 keen cooks but fine for ordinary family cooking. There is a beautiful built-in dresser, double oven cooker but a small sink (‘though there is a dishwasher). We are limited to electricity as there is no gas!
Please note that we live next door.
The Hayloft isn’t ideal for wheelchair users. The bedrooms & bathroom are on the ground floor, so that can be useful. And there is only a small step at the entrance. But the ground outside is ‘field grass’ (a little uneven), & you’d need to be able to cope with a fairly long staircase (20 steps or thereabouts).
Young children: due to the open plan style of the living room (with wood burning stove), & stairs, The Hayloft isn’t ideal for adventurous toddlers.
We do have a BBQ, but it is half an oil drum & not ideal unless you’re cooking for large numbers. So you’re probably better off with disposable BBQs. Let us know if you would like to use it, though.

Summary: My wife and I have recently enjoyed a 4 night break at the Hayloft. The accommodation is super clean, very comfortable and has amazing views across the fields and hills. Worth noting a car, is required to access the property, ideally a 4x4, but not essential. Vicky and Tom were very friendly as were the hens and Smudge the cat. The property location offers numerous areas and attractions worth visiting. I would highly recommend a train trip from Kirkby Stephen station on the Carlisle - Settle line Thank you again Vicky and Tom for your kind hospitality. Andrew & Lorna Smith

Summary: We are a group of bikers and have had a great time. This isn’t only a great location on it’s own, but also a fantastic basecamp for motorbiketrips in the Lake District, the Pennines, the Yorshire Dales and South-Scotland. Really recommended. In the house you’ll find everything you need and more

Summary: As we were driving up to the property our excitement grew and grew. This converted old hayloft was tastefully done. Still maintained the old world charm but with modern touches. You can’t beat the location. So peaceful and quiet. The views are incredible. You’ll love the drive back and forth, seeing the sheep, horses, cows and pretty views. An old castle ruin is just a few minute walk from the house. The main town is just a few minutes drive with everything you need. Shops, restaurants and grocery store. The owners were very friendly !!! So welcoming and made us feel right at home. It was like we’ve been friends for years. Also their son was so nice to our 3 1/2 year old daughter. Almost like he was her big brother, teaching her how to properly kick a football :-) Even the neighbors are so nice and friendly So bring your sketchbook and camera. Have your morning coffee out front as you watch the sheep in the next field over. You won’t be disappointed (until you have to leave)
