Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: The location was great and there was a lot of space. Gemma is really sweet and very responsive when you text. I loved the local goods basket of treats given to us. I loved the quiet atmosphere and view of the farmland. It was very easy to access but you will need a car. I loved that the living area and kitchen - they had doors to shut. There were lots of cooking ware available in the kitchen. There was an extra fridge and freezer available in the laundry room. The laundry room was huge! There were brochures and guides given about the islands and some suggestions of places to visit. Also a list of numbers and local contacts. - great touch! Loved the local hand soaps in the bathrooms.

Negative: There are lots of things that could be improved, but overall this is a great rental and I highly recommend. The 3rd bathroom toilet wouldn’t flush and therefore couldn’t be used- Gemma told us it was going to be remodeled in the future so this should be advertised as a 2 bathroom and shut access to that bathroom until it is working, the refrigerator power shut off and we had to call to get the electrical fixed, the outlets and power in several areas didn’t work- it is an old house and they clearly remodeled most of it but there are some issues with wiring still, we paid for the use of the entire house and was only given use of 3 out of the 5 bedrooms. Not all of the bedrooms were made up and no extra sheets were given for us to make up those beds. We would’ve chose to sleep in the other bedrooms not made up. I suggest labeling all the switches in the kitchen because it was very confusing. I understand the house is old and on a working farm in the country but there were lots of bugs in the house- it could be sprayed and prevented a little better. I would suggest having some laundry baskets and tablets to wash clothes - especially since we stayed 6 nights. I would suggest having a drying rack available for guest use in the laundry room since it’s so large. Other recommendations: the owners have a working farm with cows and sheep. I would suggest having some options about touring your farm- seeing the sheep and cows (babies when available). That would be a really great way to incorporate your guests with your local farm. Seals are a big highlight of the island as well. So you can include great places to visit and spot different wildlife on the islands. I would also suggest having a lockbox with a key to the door and giving the code to open it for after hours. You can add a guestbook at the entryway for people to sign to make it more personal. I suggest adding some shampoo, conditioner and body wash in the showers.

Positive: We had a fabulous week here in May 2026. The house has been fitted out throughout to a very high standard. Everything was in tip-top condition, all very modern, clean and tastefully done. The furniture is very smart. There are comfy recliners and two large TVs. The house was warm - the living room has its own heat pump making it particularly snug – and this was all very welcome after a windy day out. The kitchen was spacious and very well equipped with everything we could possibly need, all very modern and in fine condition, and there is a large separate laundry room. There were very many lovely finishing touches, from the smell of the hand wash and the softness of the towels to the silky smoothness of the bed covers. It was all wonderful. The property is a perfect base from which to explore the islands, being very near to The Ring of Brodgar, Stenness, Maeshowe and Skara Brae. Gemma was very quick to respond to my queries. Highly recommended.
