Positive: Lovely place for a quiet, relaxing break. The ground are breathtaking. The staff were welcoming and kind - especially the 2 ladies on reception on our arrival. Room was spotlessly clean and comfortable. Breakfast tasty - portions size just right. Overall great value for money. Can't wait to come back.

Negative: Noise from other rooms - but to be expected in an older property.

Summary: Peaceful stay in a beautiful little corner of the world.

Positive: Friars Carse is more guest house than hotel. The rooms, named for trees, are casual, no frills and a wee bit outdated. That's no bother and is reflected in the price. The woodland estate the Castle sits in is stunning and the trout lake/ river is definitely worth wandering around, pre or post dinner if you don't fish. We received a warm welcome at reception. During our stay the only option for dinner was a formal three course set menu, and although mains were delicious, it was expensive compared to the reasonable room rate. You wouldn't eat here with children.

Negative: The formal dining room (and price of meals) did not reflect the standard of casual accommodation. Our room felt like a shared bedroom at uni, but was adequate and we enjoyed the setting and history of it all. It could have been the grumpy guests who did not seem to be enjoying themselves but the restaurant had outdated, retirement home vibes which was a pity. The younger wait staff could not raise a smile and often got orders mixed up. Just a case of a little more training, I expect.

Positive: the staff were very courteous and friendly....the place oozed old worldly charm and comfort.....a nice relaxing atmosphere....the grounds around the hotel were fabulous for dog walking lots of history in and around the area.

Negative: The car park unfortunately was full of pot holes which were muddy and full of rain water that wasn't so good .

Summary: Enjoyed my stay and definitely would stay again .

Positive: Really nice couintry house hotel. Great atmosphere. Good breakfast, beautiful stretch of the River Nith (sadly infested with anglers). Association with Robbie Burns andinteresting history of the hotel itself.

Negative: Little bit far out of Dumfries. Though tha may be a good thing.

Summary: Like being transported back to the 30's of Jeeves and Wooster.

Negative: We booked breakfast but when we came down there wasn’t a table set for three people just tables for 2 and a huge table which we ended up sitting at and were no where near each other.

Summary: Pleasant for a short stay, very geared up for fishing if you want to do that on your break.
