Positive: Great location and excellent staff.

Negative: The hotel needed completely updating. There was no lift(although I understand one is going to be installed over the winter) The window in my bedroom didn’t close. Decor was shabby and the building needed rather a lot of repairs. The food was plentiful and very tasty, but it would have been better to have a smaller menu with daily specials as having the same huge menu every day, makes it rather boring! And one suspects much was frozen or ready meals, although I was assured the chef prepared at least some of the dishes himself! It really would benefit from selling alcohol!

Summary: staff Holly Hannah Dan and Scott were wonderful and went out of their way to make my stay very enjoyable .

Positive: The staff were very helpful and friendly, immediately gave us a more accessible room, carried our cases, and responded immediately to requests. The evening meals were exceptionally good, even the cheaper options were wonderful. And the location is great, with a view over the harbour from the dining room and easy access from the Northlink ferry. The main village street, Hoy ferry and bus station are within a few yards' walk.

Negative: The cleanliness was variable - the bedroom was spotless and in good decorative order, but the ensuite bathroom has seen better days and the pipework was dirty. likewise the landings were well maintained but the ground floor and main staircase could have been better maintained. The hotel is built into the rock so only the entrance hall is on the ground floor. We understand that there was a functioning lift until recently but this is now no longer in use.

Summary: Lovely staff and great food help to make up for the impression that this hotel has seen better days.
