Positive: The room smelled very bad. the bathroom was not clean. Considering it was a non-smoking room, the bedspread was scorched by cigarettes.

Negative: Grumpy breakfast experience; very eager to put up food offerings and turn off drink machines right at 9. Made a production out of doing so. Appreciate the fresh eggs and waffles but would have loved to make them ourselves instead of feeling as if we were troubling him to do so. We arrived to eat at 8:45 and didn't need to stay longer, but it cast a bad light to be made to feel as if we were an inconvenience...even getting a lecture on "getting up early when you're in CA." Only berating of a two-week anniversary trip from an inn/staff. He was fussy about his wife and his interactions with her, which made us feel uncomfortable, especially in celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary. We discovered later that other machines are either turned off or on a timer, so services such as the ice machine are not always available. We had a VERY late arrival, and this was on us, but road trips are like that, and in a city with rows of motels available at competitive pricing/amenity offerings, gracious hospitality is something to keep in mind. Perhaps in the future a key could have been enclosed in an envelope and hidden in a prearranged location or taped to the door, as was provided in our other lodging spots; the need to control seemed to be the prime priority rather than the desire to welcome and meet guest needs. We called earlier to alert that we would be arriving late and asking if there were any procedures that we needed to follow; we were told only, "just ring the doorbell." The wife was precious and quiet, serving so nicely; we hated to inconvenience her at all. A dog (their pet?) was wandering in and out of the breakfast space, which seemed inappropriate. We would have preferred to bring a few items up to the room and eat privately, but a sign was posting prohibiting it. Most of the places we encountered on our trip offered breakfast up until 10 or later, so all was unexpected.
