Positive: Great place if you want to disconnect from the world (no wifi but internet signal is fine if you have a sim card) and just snorkel, dive and enjoy peaceful calm by a beautiful reef with clear water on a beautiful island. Easy to organise snorkelling or diving through hotel on the same day. Snorkel boat was USD 22 for around one hour. All equipment provided including even long sleeve rashie if needed. Loved that even without going out on a boat, you can just snorkel right in the beach in front of the hotel with amazing reef. Some of the best snorkeling I've ever seen in the world here! Staff were excellent - young expats all kind and helpful. They were always very responsive when contacting them prior to arrival on WhatsApp which is the best way to communicate with any business in Timor-Leste. Free water, tea and coffee available 24/7 in dining area and other drinks available for purchase. Some books and info around in dining area. All meals included in the price - very basic food but this is not Dili so it goes with the territory. Villa was cute - quite basic but loved the outdoor bathroom; especially outdoor shower and bathtub. Air con and fridge in room also. Lovely deck with hammock out the front. Around Atauro, apart from of course the sea, it is a beautiful island with great walks (can trek up mountain or go to lookouts for easier walks) and there is Beloi beach Saturdays for main market day or smaller markets Thursdays and Tuesdays. Getting around, there is a tuk tuk or just go on the back of someone's motorbike as it's too hot to walk far during middle hours of the day. 20+ min walk from port to hotel or $2 on tuk tuk and less on motorbike.

Negative: Didn't love the food but it was as expected more or less. Would have preferred to serve my own food (as they do at Barry's buffet style) so I don't end up with portions of food I don't want/can't eat rather than be served a big plate of everything. There is a little supermarket on the island so you can buy some supplies if needed. Villa is not sealed and gets a lot of bugs inside but there is a mosquito net around the beds luckily.

Positive: Getting to the island was a mission, the ferries go when the ferries go! Nice welcome on arrival and excellent diving. Clean and comfortable room. Lovely to be away from the internet.

Negative: Minor things, although the food tasted nice it could have been warmer and in our room it needed the gaps filling around the windows and doors to stop the mozzies.

Summary: Clean and comfortable and good to get away from the world, great diving.

Positive: The resort made visiting the exceptional reefs of the island easy and very enjoyable, with an excellent dive master to guide you. The staff was attentive and welcoming. Good location on the water, but no beach.

Negative: The buffet meals were mediocre.

Positive: The staff were lovely, helpfully and great to have a chat with. Food was nice and dining area had a home feel about it as everyone has meal together with who ever is staying at the time. Nice selection of books to read and lounge area to relax. The night breeze in hammocks by the beach was relaxing. Due to weather we didn’t snorkel and we aren’t divers but still found it very relaxing.

Negative: The villa pictured online looks great but we didn’t get that villa on arrival as expected - I did discuss with staff it wasn’t the villa I booked, or as pictured but nothing done about it, as villa pictured was out of order 🤷🏼‍♀️ The bathroom facilities were below standard and no amenities provided. I won’t post pics as I just want make others aware to drop expectations to what is advertised. I was happy to pay the expense for the advertised and booked villa but unhappy paying the same for something not as pictured or as nice but with food cooked and provided we didn’t fuss on payment. Red wine bottles need to be replaced more often if not a big turn around as they turn to vinegar over time. I understand the difficulties being on an isolated Island. No TV’s in villa - can be good or bad.

Positive: Staff was great, food was good, calm location, diving in atauro is amazing and this team make it easy.

Negative: It would be nice to have some sunbeds on area. Mosquito nets would be nice plus to the room.

Positive: I had the most wonderful time at Compass Diving Resort! By the end of my short 2 night trip, the dive instructors, Popay and Patrik, felt like family. They made me feel so welcome, safe, and entertained! My villa was lovely, with a large bathroom and air conditioning. I have also never been so well fed, with three square meals a day with lots of variety. My transportation to and from Atauro was organized and smooth. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I was sad to leave!

Negative: No WiFi, but I knew that coming in. The dive instructors were kind enough to let me use their data hotspots!
