Matapouri is a fantastic place to holiday - idyllic enough to relax and get away from it all, close enough to have lots of things to fill your day, whatever the season.
Our family has enjoyed Matapouri beach for many many years. It's a fantastic beach that is safe and sheltered and offers something for everyone.
The estuary behind the bach is a great place to use the two paddle boards - on the high tide you can venture a long way into the mangroves and then drift back on the outgoing tide.
Must do's include, a walk around the headland and a visit to sensational Whale Bay; there are plenty of coastal walks in a short drive; Head out to the Poor Knights (snorkling and diving) on a day trip from Tutukaka; There is a community tennis court (for those who don't mind the odd crack in the surface); For those who enjoy surfing (or want to learn), Sandy Bay is a short 10min drive away or on the right swell, Matapouri has some good waves; Another favourite is a visit to the Abbey Caves (about 25 mins drive) - best done during the dry months, its very cool though not for small kids. Other activities include golf in Ngunguru, horse treking from Sandy Bay and Tree Adventures. If you get tired of BBQ’ing and cooking for yourself, Schnappa Rock in Tutukaka is an institution.

Summary: A long time in the planning (exactly 9 months ago) 10 of us; who had got together in Matapouri 10 years prior, came together again for 2.5 days of reminiscing, fun, laughter and smiles. The Hines holiday house was the perfect spot for us all...comfy and roomy, the location a mere couple of steps from the golden sandy beach and a vista to get all dreamy about....gorgeous. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend to anyone looking for a holiday house for a large group whether they be family or friends. The house caters well for all.

Summary: If you want to feel like you’re living the dream whilst on holiday, this is the place to book. We felt like we had to keep blinking to confirm that the ocean was truly right there within reach and the Bach had everything we needed to be comfortable and catered for all our needs. Finding the SUP boards and giving something new a go was so fun! We got blasted by a storm but didn’t get cabin fever as the house has so many layers and really accommodates everyone. Just loved our stay and would love to come back for the best views in the bay!!
