Positive: Yamagataya is a historic hotel with over 180 years of history. The property consists of multiple buildings, which can be a bit confusing to navigate at first, but the staff were extremely dedicated in explaining everything. Even though they had limited English, they did their very best to help. The room I booked had a toilet but no shower. I actually saw this as a positive thing—a 'good excuse' to force myself to use the Onsen, which was the main purpose of my visit anyway! There is also a souvenir shop on-site. I highly recommend booking the plan with meals (breakfast and dinner). The dinner set, in particular, features Hida Beef Shabu-Shabu, which is an absolute must-try!
Summary: A lovely stay at this 180-year-old historic hotel

Positive: Highlight of the trip for the entire family. Gero is such a beautiful area and Yamagataya fit right in as though it was a part of the scenery. I thought the onsen stop on my family's itinerary would be more for the grown ups, but my two 10 year olds and my 7 year old LOVED it too. The included traditional dinner and breakfast was excellent, though maybe a little "adventurous" for the young ones. We reserved a private open air bath for 45 minutes, for the family to enjoy and not get separated, which was also a great experience. Maybe when they get a bit older we can "do as the Japanese do" and go to the ones that are open to all their guests, which I am sure are great too. View from the room is second to none. It is a short walk around the town, which is lovely. Quick walk down to the river and a free public foot bath, that was so nice on the cold evening when we first arrived there, especially after all the walking we did in Osaka in the days prior. If coming here, scheduling it after a few days in a place like Osaka or Tokyo is a good way to recharge your body's battery. The staff was amazing. The room was fantastic. My back isn't usually great sleeping on a floor, but the futons they provide in the traditional rooms were comfortable for us, but I know everyone's bodies and comfort levels are different, so results may be different for you.
Negative: It is a beautiful, luxurious place, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that it is a little on the expensive side. You get what you pay for right? If you are able to, and money is not really an object, stay for more nights, but our budget didn't allow for it. For us, it was a one-night "splurge", but it was worth it. Gero itself, is also a bit out of the way. You will most likely be a few hours train ride away from wherever your next stop is, but again, for ME it was worth it. Plus, a lot of the train ride is quite peaceful and scenic, especially in the fall. I just mention the length of the train rides here so you know.
