The region
Set within Exmoor National Park on the Brendon Hills on the southern slope of Croydon Hill, Luxborough enjoys a peaceful and beautiful setting. Exmoor's highest point, Dunkery Beacon, is a short drive or a long walk away and the views from the top on a clear day are spectacular.
Luxborough is a small village that is divided into the hamlets of Churchtown, Kingsbridge and Pooltown, which all lie within a mile of each other. In years gone by people came to the Luxborough area to mine iron ore and it was sent via the West Somerset Mineral Railway to Watchet on the coastline. In the 19th century the school was reported to have 200 pupils from the village and the iron mines in the Brendon Hills.
The ancient Church of St Mary in Churchtown is believed to date from Norman times, or some believe it may be Saxon times due to a Cross in the Churchyard. Today, St Mary's is a Grade II listed building.
Bridleways and footpaths crisscross near and through Luxborough, including the famous Coleridge Way which passes through the village.
The Royal Oak Inn serves drinks and good food, approx 1 mile away from the cottage in Luxborough.
Roadwater is situated 4 miles to the east and the popular village of Dunster is 4.5 miles to the north.
Wheddon Cross (approx 5 miles) has a newly refurbished mini-supermarket with Post Office facilities and a petrol station with good opening times. Roadwater also has a local shop and pub which serves food.
Dunster is also approx 4 miles, but in the other direction. This wonderful medieval village is really worth a visit, it has lots of shops, restaurants, tea rooms and a village shop all overlooked by a spectacular castle.
Minehead is the nearest town, approximately 7 miles away. Here you will find the larger supermarkets plus a range of other shops throughout the town.
The glorious North Devon beaches of Woolacombe, Putsborough and Croyde are just a scenic hour's drive away across Exmoor.
Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose as well as Cook from Taunton will deliver to Luxborough.

Summary: We had a brilliant week. The cottage was so welcoming and comfortable - and in such an idyllic setting! It felt like a home not a holiday let.

Summary: The garden and views were stunning, unfortunately because of all the rain we had the lawn couldnt be mowed so it was a bit like a field, not that the dogs minded at all! The house is very quirky due to it originally being three cottages so there are two kitchens and two lounges and the bathroom upstairs goes right across the middle of the house so there are two doors either side to open and lock, soon got used to it. The house was cosy due to the aga being on all the time. There is an electric oven which is old and the oven takes ages. We love Exmoor and was out every day walking the dogs. We had 3 lovely days and three days sunshine and showers the Doone valley was our favourite day. We did go to the Royal Oak in the village and had a very nice meal there with friendly staff. There are 3 birdfeeders in the garden and it was lovely to hear and see them every day, they are very greedy and got through the seeds in record time! There is no phone signal there but that is usual on Exmoor. A bottle of champagne, lemon drizzle cake and flowers were left which was fantastic and much appreciated. We eally had a lovely time and enjoyed the quiet and very comfortable beds. It was a well equipped house and we would definately recommend it.

Summary: This is a quirky, characterful and comfortable house with a gorgeous garden in a beautiful very rural location. It isn't for those with mobility issues who mind ducking for some low doors, a bit of a slope, or dread meeting a tractor on a single track road. But if you want seclusion, privacy, beautiful views and stunning (slightly challenging but rewarding) walks from your door; before shedding boots and coats in a big boot room en route to the Aga - then this is a great place to stay. The weather was mixed when we stayed but the Sky TV and WiFi were great for rainy hours and a bit of home-working. Six adults of split generations and 1 dog enjoyed walks with views to Wales, dark night skies, a sun trap patio, the tallest tree in England, Dunster, Minehead, Porlock Weir and fantastic food on several occasions (it was that good) at the Royal Oak Inn a steep mile away. Finally, the neighbours were really nice and it felt like the owners genuinely cared that we had a good time.

Mary B. Jul 12, 2023 05:37:24 PM
Summary: Property was quiet and quirky with lovely views across the valley and hills. There’s plenty of local walks and excellent local pub, The Royal Oak. The cottage is within easy distance of major tourist attractions but still hidden away for a quieter break. Would thoroughly recommend.
