Positive: We brought our own breakfast, which suited us very well and made use of the common kitchen. Spillville is a sweet town in a lovely area; my brother's wife has many connections there. It worked out well to have convenient access to Decorah. We were quite impressed with the efforts made by the owner and staff to resolve the air conditioning issue. They were also very welcoming and friendly.

Negative: Unfortunately some of the air conditioning units had failed and the weather was unseasonably warm, so the first night we were stifling. The owner and staff however went out of their way to improve the situation and installed a room air conditioner. That was a huge relief. We like to read in bed and reading lamps in the room would be nice.

Summary: Lovely weekend in a charming old building.

Positive: The historical Wenzil Taylor Building was the perfect stay for my mini vacation to northeast Iowa. My room was clean, quiet, comfortable and had all the amenities I needed, and more. Josh (the owner) and his staff were very friendly and eager to make sure everything was just right for my stay. The bar and restaurant have a great ambience - dining in a tunnel was a very cool 'first' for me - the service was great, and the food was fantastic (I recommend the fire braised ribs). The location is a perfect home base for trips to nearby attractions, including the Bily Brothers Clock Museum just a few doors down the street, the World's Smallest Church near Festina, IA, the Norman Borlaug birthplace and boyhood farms, and all the natural beauty northeast Iowa has to offer. The Wenzil Taylor Building is a definite must if you want a clean, comfortable, relaxing place to stay.

Positive: The bed was very comfortable, and the room itself was spacious with a unique charm. The bathroom was also generously sized, and I appreciated the large towels. I wasn’t a big fan of the old-school keyed locks—would have preferred a digital lock system for convenience. The restaurant and bar had a nice vibe. I didn’t order any food, but I did spend a couple of hours at the bar chatting with some locals, which was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the history of the building, the furnishings, and the overall atmosphere of the place.

Negative: There weren’t any cups provided in the room or bathroom, which made it tricky to drink water or rinse after brushing my teeth. Also, the room didn’t have its own thermostat, the temperature is controlled for the entire floor, so if it’s not set to your preference, there’s not much you can do to adjust it.

Summary: Overall, it was a good value, and I’d gladly stay again—I really enjoy the boutique hotel experience

Positive: It was a historical building. The bar has a cool atmosphere.

Negative: The pillows were very thin, no waste basket for the bathroom. But for the price you can't really complain. The owners were very nice and asked if we needed anything. I didn't think to ask for different pillows.
