This metal sided lodge with a metal roof was once offices for a construction company. The owners happened to be our landlords when we rented their cottage across the field. We fell in love with the 2000 acre park behind us and wanted to create our own space.
Since we renovate homes for a living, we were able to collect a lot of items along the way that didn't fit someone else's vision for their new space. There was also the mismeasured door or cabinet or window that needed a new home. All of these lovely items found a new home in our converted structure.The screened porch was a covered dirt floor for lumber. Our great room was a garage and the bedrooms were offices.As you can see from the pictures, it has come a long way.
It is hard to get the experience of feeling you are a million miles away from everything unless you take out a second mortgage on your home and head to the Polynesian Islands. Fortunately for us, we found this crown jewel of a 2000 acre park called Warren Dunes on the lake one hour and twenty minutes from Chicago. We are on the North end of the park away from the main entrance so it is like owning your own private estate on the lake. We hardly run into a soul all year round. Since we can not enjoy all the time ourselves, we decided to share the secret with you..

Summary: Property was very outdated and had water damage in spots. When we were looking for extra linens, we opened the door to the water heater which showed evidence of mold. Beds were very squeaky. Floors were clean, but the ceiling fan was filthy (we couldn’t turn the dining room light on without turning the fan on - the fan was COVERED in dust and filth). The outdoor areas were not usable, and the locks did not work with the key provided (once we were able to unlock the key box).

Summary: Clean, spacious main room and kitchen, nice hot tub and screened patio spacious. Master bed dips, but slept fine. Lock on door isn't reliable, could be very easily remedied with new locks. Good location to a fun area and easy communication with owner.

Summary: Property not as close to things to do during off season. A few items need some tlc and outdoor lighting for safety. If you bring pet would not recommend leaving un attended as may escape the fences in yard.

Summary: Place was quiet and cozy. Enclosed porch with hot tub was not too private with mobile home window facing the hot tub. The key to get in the door took us forever to get the door unlocked. Never have seen a door lock this way. But overall a quiet place and was clean besides a pan in the oven with a pretzel on it. There wss

Summary: We truly loved the trails to Warren dunes from the end of the road. It was stunning and incredible to be able to got on an evening walk to watch the sunset while watching your kids climb dunes they have all to themselves. It was honestly an ok VRBO. The door truly did not lock, seemed to be able to push the front door open no matter what we tried. The yard and hot tub porch left a lot to be desired but the kids were perfectly happy. I would say that if you have children on cots one of the rooms is quite spacious and allows room for extra people while one is a bit smaller to add sleepers. We stayed for 2 nights, it was a good place to sleep and adventure from but not our favorite as a place to hang out.

Summary: Overall was a good spot. House is nice to stay in and is a perfect 10 min walk from beach through warren dunes state park. However, the only downside was the cleanliness. There was mouse droppings in the pull out mattress. But the owner was able to work with us to sort out the situation. Also some of the neighbors smoked weed one evening but I'm assuming the host talked to them because it didn't happen again after.
