Positive: The experience of the stay is superb! You can actually live like the local Nagasaki people (on the hill) and listen to the sound from the vessel or the Mitsubishi ship yard. The owner was very friendly and helpful. The house is exactly what we’re looking for. Highly recommended for people who want to experience the area.

Negative: The steps to the house will be challenging for elders, kids.

Positive: The property is located close to the city and tourist attractions in a charming old residential area on the hilly coastline of the Nagasaki Bay. It is actually a freestanding house, not an apartment. This is a plus. There is even a small though unkempt garden. The living room, kitchen and bathroom are on the ground floor. There is a (low) door from the kitchen to the front garden with a view to the bay. This door can be opened to provide fresh air and when cooking. The bedroom and dressing room are on the second floor. This is the floor with the balcony and harbour view from where one can see both the Megami Bridge and the city. These views are especially pretty at night. It is very quiet, the only sounds being the coming and going of boats to and from the harbour. The property is clean and newly refurbished in “IKEA-style” but with many well-thought-out, custom interior designer details and an almost luxurious Western style. There are stickers with instructions for things you should be aware in English (only). The beds on the second floor are really comfortable. The make-up table in the dressing room has a view out to the bay through a charming round window. The sofa on the ground floor living room (with an additional mattress to be found on the second-floor dressing room) for other guests less so, but acceptable. The TV was built into a “fire-place alcove” that made viewing comfortable. The bathtub was comfortable and the water can be temperature regulated. There were quite enough bathroom towels, and they were of good quality. We were there in February and the gas heaters (both upstairs and down) worked perfectly. The whole feeling of the place is of pleasant luxury. It was nice that the sleeping quarters were separate from the living quarters. Indeed the overall experience of this homely property was of better value than a really good hotel.

Negative: The property description does not tell you either about the steps leading up to the house, or inside the house itself. There are approximately 100 (uneven) steps from the carpark to the house and a flight of steep steps from the ground floor to the second floor bedroom. If you either have big bags or suitcases, or if you have problems climbing stairs this is NOT a property for you. If however, you only have smaller suitcases or overnight bags the property is perfect. As the booking is NON-REFUNDABLE it is cheating that this information is not included in the property description on the website so you can know the real situation BEFORE booking. It is also ESSENTIAL that you open the URL the owner will send to you prior to arrival to find instructions of where to park and how to get to the property BEFORE arriving. If you do not, the GPS will take you to the nearest point to the house which is up a very narrow and steep road and only just wide enough for one car to pass. From here you will have to turn round (not a problem as there is a private car park close by) and go back down to find the free parking lot on the coast road. You have to remember to message the owner your car license number and which parking space you took. When we called the telephone provided on the website, the owner did not answer. Generally, it seems the best way to contact is via the Booking dot com messaging app. In an emergency this could maybe be a problem. If you are a little sensitive to noise – especially as the property is otherwise completely quiet - the ferries to the islands run also during the night hours and accelerate/decellerate just opposite the house. The kitchen is indeed well-equipped, but there is neither a rice cooker nor a nor a coffee maker or a tea pot. The cold-water faucet in the bathroom had a sign on it that it was out of order. The toilet does NOT have a Japanese style warmed bidet-style seat with spray function.

Summary: A charming homely house with access via 100 uneven steps but otherwise far exceeds expectations.
