Positive: I liked the private/ family run atmosphere. Staff were helpful and friendly. Breakfast and evening meals were good.

Negative: Admin was a bit unclear.

Summary: A good hotel in a good location, felt more comfortable than many of the big corporate hotels.

Positive: The owner. Very warm welcome and excellent service . Quirky hotel with some lovely historical elements. Check out the doors to the function room originally made for nearby castle but sized incorrectly and snapped up by the Earl of Lympster for his home, now the Portland hotel.

Negative: Bar shut early but staff were short and only so much one woman can do! We were able to take our wine and sit in the lounge

Positive: the owners went out of their way to help in all circumstances what a lovely couple and the chef was nice too meals were beautiful cooked just perfect room was spacious and had a view

Negative: Booking.com Said the breakfast was included. That you were offered only a poor continental breakfast. I had to pay ten pounds for a cooked breakfast. Slightly disappointed Could do with more staff. A lot of people waiting to be served and unblocking slightly lost

Positive: Breakfast bacon was poor. Could have soled your shoes with it, it was totally overcooked and inedible. On our second morning, we were told there was only one sausage left and we could chose who could have it. Hilarious!!

Negative: The hotel was cold. Bedroom and beds were cold. I took the towel off the hand rail heater and wrapped it around my feet to keep warm. A fireplace in lounge had a log fire set up. If that had been lit, it would have made room warmer and more welcoming.

Summary: Owner very friendly. Sorry, but wouldn't recommend or stay there again.

Positive: The hotel was on the NC500 route and suited us perfectly in terms of distance travelled. Hotel was clean and food very good. The staff very friendly and accommodating. The music selection in the restaurant was brilliant, mostly 60’s and 70’s.
