Communication with the host was quick and helpful, and someone was there to show me how everything in the room works. The room was clean, tidy, and quiet — perfect for a comfortable stay. Positive: The apartment was very clean and fully equiped. The owner was very helpful as he made our checkin earlier than what was agreed.

Negative: The owner of apartment gave me a number of a lady that was supossed to take us in but when I called her she did not speak English and if you even try to talk to her she will only respond in French. She also said she can speak Arabic which was not very useful. Apartment was also located in a part of a city where are stolen, broken cars. you will feel very unsafe here becouse people are very dangerous.

Positive: The cleaning and preparation for our stay was impeccable: everything in place, the exact number of dishwasher tabs and coffee pads set out for use. The beds and sofa were comfortable. The bathroom was well designed and the rain shower was warm and relaxing (bring a plug for the sink, though). We cooked regularly and greatly appreciated the kitchen supplies and appliances. Once we contacted the proprietor for the WLAN name and code, the internet connection and capacity was excellent. The public transportation options (metro and bus) gave fast connections to central areas.

Negative: If you don't have a telephone with a functioning French connection and/or an independent source of internet, it will be very difficult to check-in, as you need to call the proprietor who sends a lady with the key. The neighborhood was indeed near a metro station and had several options for groceries and eating out. However, there could be refuse in the tall grass around street lanterns, on sidewalks, in front of doorways.... This is not generally the case in Marseilles or France. At check-out, one is expected to bring the used linens to the washing machine (in the apt.), as well as take the trash to a bin outside the building. Although I have used Booking for years, this is the first time that was required of me as a guest. I also conferred with a Booking host who confirmed that that is unusual. Also be aware that you need to leave a 200 Euro deposit on arrival which will be returned at the inspection sometime before departure (also not in the Booking guidelines - they theoretically cover for damages incurred by hosting - however, my friend said that his experience had been otherwise. In this case, I understand the deposit request - but it was a hassle to organize and interrupted the relaxation that a guest expects to have until leaving.)
