Positive: Truly special place to stay because it’s part of this old religious tradition and thousands of pilgrims to the mountain have stayed here before you. It’s also family owned. The food is unique, and the preparation and presentation is excellent. A pleasant short walk to the hike / mountain itself.
Negative: Rooms are pretty basic and the sink in the room has no hot water. Unless you are driving, it’s a bit of a project to get to and from Tsuruoka, and there is nothing to do immediately around the lodging (not even a konbini).

Positive: I think it’s important to recognize that rating a temple stay isn’t like rating other accommodations since you’re likely staying for the experience, not just a bed. Things we enjoyed about this stay: —so helpful and interesting to have translation for the morning prayer service. —very convenient for visiting Mt Haguro and enjoyed that Daishinbo has such a long history of serving pilgrims visiting this holy mountain —warm smiles from the hosts and other staff —a very large room with a personal sink and sitting chairs —the food all tasted really good and I appreciated how clean it was (a meal meant historically to “purify” pilgrims for their visit to the temple)
Negative: —This time of year the building is very cold. There is a nice heater to keep the room warm as well as a heater in the dining area. —because it was so cold, more warm foods for breakfast and dinner would have been nice. There was warm miso soup and rice, but all other food was cold. —I looked forward to using the onsen, but it wasn’t very warm when I tried so I didn’t get in (not sure if typical or if previous users adjusted something) —a water kettle in the room would be nice to be able to make hot tea/coffee

Positive: - Beautiful building - Wonderful staff - Included dinner and breakfast are delicious - Tatami mat rooms are comfortable and quiet - Excellent location - easy 5-10min walk to start of Haguro-san - Accepted solo female traveler
