Positive: Shiroyamakan is a century-old ryokan run by a family in the 4th generation. It has recently been renovated in a very nice minimalist modern style. It is located right at the beginning of the traffic restricted main street of the village. The family is welcoming you with great warmth. The daughter who runs the place with her husband speaks great English. Her dad is the head-chef in the kitchen and - on top - runs a daily tour through the village with his very funny personal style. The most special experience is the dinner: A haute cuisine kaiseki-style dinner based on practically all local ingredients, some of which collected in the wild or hunted in the mountains right outside.

Positive: We have been traveling around Japan for quite a while, and this was the most beautiful place we stayed! Everything here is just perfect :) The minimalist design is beautiful, yet the whole place feels so warm and welcoming. The room was spotless and smelled amazing, the facilities are outstanding, and the bathtub overlooking the river is simply a dream. Both dinner and breakfast were exceptional - so unique and delicious, and honestly on the level of a top chef's restaurant. But more than anything, what makes this place so special is the family who runs it. They are so kind, warm, and thoughtful, and their hospitality is something really special. It's the perfect combination of a boutique experience with incredible attention to every detail, while still feeling warm and personal. We stayed here with our baby, and they were so patient and caring with him. They made sure he had everything he needed, and they even looked after him while we enjoyed our dinner. We highly appreciate that! We are truly grateful we had the chance to stay in such an amazing place. We can't recommend it enough!

Positive: I am not exaggerating when I say that every single thing about this experience exceeded our expectations. We visited Japan for over two weeks, and this was by far and away the best thing we did. The entire staff (family) were wonderful. I've never felt more immersed in any location before. It was so wonderful that I hope to some day learn Japanese so that I can go back and visit and get even more out of the experience. The food was wonderful, unique, and such a luxurious, yet homey, meal. The tour was a once in a lifetime opportunity - don't miss it!
Summary: If you're on the fence at all about booking at Shiroyamakan, don't be - just Shirakawa-GO! :)

Positive: The location couldn't be better - directly across from the bus station. The family staff is obviously dedicated to providing a wonderful experience. The father is full of stories and so friendly, uses Google Translate and gave us a free tour of the village by car. The menu (dinner and breakfast) is wild-harvested, seasonally fresh, and cooked by the whole family. Do not be scared by the "public bathroom" description (gave me visions of walking in the dark to the camp toilet). However, the description doesn't do it justice. While the bath is not en-suite, it is inside the hotel, a few feet from your room, private, exceptionally clean with an incredible view. The toilet/WC is inside your bedroom. The view from the room is exceptional, with a 7 foot long window that fully opens up to the outside, allowing in sounds of the burbling river below. The beds are firm, covered in downy duvets. Yukata are provided. Impeccably clean room.
Negative: I should have mentioned I was a pescatarian ahead of time. Not wanting to be rude, I ate what was served but some courses were slightly difficult to finish. That said, it further made me appreciate how much work it takes to forage and make meals in such an isolated area.

Positive: We stayed here during our family trip in 2017 and truly loved the place. Staying at Shiroyamakan feels like living inside a piece of Edo‑period heritage, where every creak of the floor tells a story — yet it’s run by a modern family whose service is exemplary. As part of the stay, the innkeeper takes guests on an hour‑long tour of Shirakawa‑go every afternoon at 3 PM. We joined the tour in the winter of 2017 and hoped to relive it in the spring of 2026, but unfortunately missed it by 30 minutes due to traffic en route. We were quite disappointed at first, but to our delight, the innkeeper kindly offered to take us on a private tour the next morning. We truly appreciated that human touch.
Negative: Other than the excellent accommodation and service, we also returned for the Kaiseki dinner and breakfast, which we remembered fondly from our previous stay. While the new Kaiseki menu was beautifully presented and still reflected the chef’s skill and authenticity, we felt it didn’t quite match the richness of the 2017 experience. Back then, the meals featured premium ingredients such as Hida beef, sashimi and felt more hearty and indulgent. This time, the focus seemed to lean toward lighter fare — more vegetables and white meat — perhaps aiming for a healthier balance. It was still enjoyable, but we found ourselves missing the more luxurious touches from before.

Positive: The dinner is so masterfully crafted from start to finish using whatever is in season and accessible. For a lot of the veggies and some of the meat one of the family members actually goes and forages it. Also, staying in a building that's been around for 140 years is a really cool feeling.
Negative: Absolutely nothing. Everything was top notch.
Summary: Wonderful stay in a beautiful traditional ryokan with a lovely family.
