Cortijo Romero is a lovingly restored, fully furnished, self catering farmhouse, with exclusive use of a small private pool, in the heart of the stunning unspoilt countryside of rural inland Andalucia in Southern Spain.
Set on the very edge of the small village of Venta Micena, near Orce in the province of Granada and with far reaching views to the mountains, the house is in a beautiful location. Inside the ceilings are high and the rooms are airy and spacious. Because of the thick stone walls the house remains pleasantly cool in the summer with no need for air conditioning.
There are three bedrooms, a large sitting-room with wood burning stove, a good-sized dining room, a character kitchen containing another wood stove, and a spacious bathroom.
Outside are enclosed courtyard gardens containing trees, flowers and a variety of herbs, within easy picking distance of the kitchen! There are also some large terraces with many flowers in pots, a covered dining area with table and six chairs, a built-in barbecue and the completely private pool.
A rustic table at the front of the house is a great place to watch the changing light on the mountains and observe the wildlife. To the side is a tree filled field, perfect for picnicking. The property also has the benefit of free wifi.
The house is in a very quiet location with just the sound of birdsong and the occasional distant bells of the goats.
Ten kilometres away, in Orce, there are shops, restaurants and bars, where free tapas is served with every drink. Orce has a weekly market, a castle and a museum of prehistory. Just outside the town of Orce is a large spring fed freshwater swimming pool where you can swim with fish. Entry is free and there are poolside bars.
There are great walks from the house into the surrounding hills and the possibilities for mountain biking are virtually endless.
Cortijo Romero is available all year found and is a fantastic place to celebrate Christmas and New Year with views to the snow capped mountains.

Summary: Our stay was very pleasant and relaxing. Our hosts David and Simon made us very welcome and went the extra mile to make us feel at home. The accommodation is spotless. Summary: Great place. Simon and David are amazing hosts they welcomed us with homemade bread and a bottle of wine. Every day in the morning they've cleaned the pool between 8 and 9. They are always up for a friendly chat but othervise you don't really see them. Great place, really quite location ideal for those who are planning on a relaxing vacation. There are many things to see in 30 mile radius. The house is really easy to find mind you Venta Micena is really just few houses. The pool is good size the outside area includes two BBQs 1 big 1 small and two big sized tables as well. We could choose a good selection of board/card games for the evening entertainment and there are plenty of books, dvds and tv channels avaliable. We could also use the free WiFi . Overall is a brilliant place for family holidays if you like the laid back spanish lifestyle and the breath taking scenery this place is for you.

Summary: Cortijo Romero has a unique charm. The journey there was an adventure through Spanish terrain we had not previously encountered. Arriving at the house we found a perfect oasis. The space in the house and outside allowed for enjoyment of sunshine and welcome shade when needed; the private pool a lovely bit of luxury. We enjoyed exploring Orce- a very small but pleasant place to have a drink and watch the world go by- or wait for the shops to open - opening times not being very specific! Juanjo grocers provides a little treasure trove of food. The natural swimming pool just outside Orce was a hit with the kids. Castril was also a great place to visit to walk along the waterfall and cool off in the open air swimming pool. The house was a perfect place to enjoy a hot August week in absolute peace; the evenings are so quiet- only the sound of goats being herded in the distance. We loved it- if you like the photos you'll love the reality. The hosts are welcoming, discretely available to help if required but left us in peace to enjoy the house.

Summary: The photographs on the website convinced us to choose Cortijo Romero for our two-week holiday but when we arrived it was clear that even the photos don’t do the property justice - everything seems much more spacious when we were there. The house has been beautifully restored and comfortably furnished and was immaculately clean throughout. We were amazed at the extent of the private courtyard which offers a beautiful garden, covered dining area, patio, swimming pool and sunbathing area; we spent many happy hours there enjoying the tranquillity of the property’s location. There are no restaurants in Venta Micena (there is a bar but this was closed during our stay) but this was not a problem for us as we prefer to cook our own meals. The kitchen is well equipped with pans and utensils, and the four-ring hob/oven meant that our culinary creativity was unconstrained! There is also a good-sized barbeque in the garden if that’s your catering preference. The market visits different towns in the area each day of the week which was ideal for buying all of our fruit and veg, supplemented by fruit and almonds from David and Simon’s garden and fresh herbs from the cortijo’s own private courtyard garden. There are two small supermarkets in Orce (10km) but we preferred to go to a larger supermarket in Huescar (25km) which offered a wider selection of goods and was on the way to a number of the great locations we chose for our days out. There are so many places to visit and so much beautiful and varied scenery to enjoy within 40km of Cortijo Romero but we would thoroughly recommend: 1) visiting Castril and doing the loop walk which starts and ends at the gorge; and 2) driving the tiny road north from Huescar to Las Santas and then taking the Los Collados road around La Sagra mountain and back to Huescar. In summary this is a superb cortijo set in a peaceful location, surrounded by fields and mountains; we couldn’t get enough of the view from the front of the house towards the Sierra de Maria Mountains. Thanks to David and Simon for their hospitality which helped to make this such an enjoyable and memorable holiday for us.

Summary: We loved our stay! Beautiful house in stunning, peaceful surroundings. Everything was thought of and there were so many lovely touches in the house, it made us all feel so welcome and relaxed. Clean, comfortable beds, well equipped and hosts who were not at all invasive but always there if We needed anything! Perfect! So glad we found it and we will always remember those stars!

Summary: We were made to feel very welcome at Cortijo Romero and soon felt very much at home. Our hosts were helpful and friendly, never intrusive, and helped to make our stay a real pleasure. We enjoyed their thoughtful welcome gifts ... a loaf of bread, a large chocolate cake, a pot of jam and a jar of chutney (all home made), and a bottle of wine....but more importantly we enjoyed meeting them, and their tips about where to go and what to see were invaluable. We stayed for two weeks and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to see something of a very particular part of Spain. The countryside is stunning with lots of opportunities to go for leisurely, or more strenuous, walks. The local towns and villages are well worth a visit too. The Cortijo itself is full of character and beautifully restored. In the heat of early summer the house remained wonderfully cool and, of course, we had the garden and pool to enjoy. We found the property to be spotlessly clean, and very well equipped for a comfortable and relaxing stay.Everything we needed was supplied, We will certainly recommend Cortijo Romero to our friends. If you want a comfortable stay in 'real Spain' this is the place to choose!
