Grasstrees Private Nature Reserve is a 115ha conservation area on the northern slopes of Bolivia Hill, NSW.
This small patch of granite outcrops and dry sclerophyll forest is managed under a Conservation Agreement In Perpetuity with the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust. Grasstrees assists also with the work of the Biodiversity and Conservation Division of the NSW Department of Planning and Environment in its conservation efforts for several threatened and endangered plant species found on Bolivia Hill. Reports of Little Eagle sightings at Grasstrees are submitted to the Northern Tablelands Threatened Birds of Prey Recovery Strategy. And Granite Borders Land Care’s Cool Country Koala Project has provided hundreds of trees for planting to assist in rebuilding koala habitat in the nature reserve.
Since 2009, the flora and fauna of this property have been observed and documented. Much work has been done. Lists containing upward of 90 bird species and 208 plant species are well established. Other lists of our observations are in various stages of development: frogs; reptiles; placental mammals, marsupials, and monotremes; arachnids; butterflies and moths; and other insects.
Grasstrees can be observed and explored via a network of mowed walking tracks, GPS-guided walks, 4WD tracks and free roaming. A current focus is observing the process and patterns of recovery following drought (2017 – 2019, bushfire (November 2019), La Nina rains (2020 – late 2022) and another extended dry period from May to November 2023, including the driest September and October on record.
Our visitors share a passion for nature and an interest in the complexity, challenges and delights of the unique Australian bush. Visitors with a professional, research or personal interest relevant to understanding the biodiversity of Grasstrees are welcome.
Contributions to the Grasstrees natural history knowledge bank are highly valued.

Summary: My husband and I have just spent 10 nights at Grasstrees on Bolivia Hill. John and Trish were lovely hosts - there when you needed them but not there when you didn't (though we did manage to have a glass of wine with them one afternoon!) John and Trish have created a beautiful haven on Bolivia Hill, surrounded by granite boulders, bush and lots of wildlife. The Grasstrees cabin is beautifully constructed - well insulated, with a fabulous fireplace and deck where you can sit and watch the sunrise in the mornings and ponder the most amazing view of the Bolivia valley below. The kitchen is well equipped and the bed very comfortable. The sheets were pure cotton which is lovely. The bathroom is tasteful and the natural products eg. shampoo, conditioner, body wash are all organic and very nice to use. The property is well located just a half hour's drive in various directions to Torrington Conservation Area, Bald Hill NP, Kingsplains NP, Emmaville Mining Museum and Tenterfield. So if you're looking to get away from the hustle and bustle, we recommend a stay at Grasstrees. We wish John and Trish all the best with their endeavours to attract tourists to this scenically beautiful area of Bolivia Hill.

Summary: The gatehouse was wonderful- beautiful views - cabin was very equipped and comfortable - fireplace was enjoyed ! We went for great walks and our favourite time was sitting on the veranda watching the local wildlife in the morning with a coffee and in the afternoon with a wine.

Summary: Beautiful property with sweeping views from the cabin. Super clean and comfortable with all necessities and amazing Woodstock. Trish and her husband were super helpful and accommodating. Lots of walks to be had on their property with wildlife all around Perfect getaway 👌

Summary: You know when you really need to get away from the city and you book accomodation and hope for the best. Well Grass Trees was everything we hoped for and more. The accomodation was even better than the photos. The cabin is clean, well appointed, very comfy and has the most amazing view. Every single afternoon we couldn't wait to get back to the cabin after our country drives and watch the sun set, Wallaroos eating grass and small birds enjoying the native trees next to the cabin. The hosts, Trish and John, are so lovely and friendly and very discreet. They leave you alone to get the rest you need but equally love a chat if you are up for it. If you need some down time away from it all don't hesitate to book this lovely country stay. :)

Summary: We thoroughly enjoyed our stat at The Gatehouse. The accommodation is very clean, well maintained, reasonably new and high on a hill with a deck to enjoy the great views of the valley. There is plenty of pristine property to explore on site, like a mini Girraween national park - there are GPS co-ordinates for the more adventurous walks. Good Telstra mobile reception. Tenterfield and the Stanthorpe wineries are a short drive away. Trish & John are great hosts too. Great place to relax and unwind. Enjoy!

Summary: We had had a very long day with car troubles and when we arrived the fireplace and calm music just relaxed us. I loved the quiet, the views, the walks in the bush and sighting some of the natural inhabitants. It was clean and the hosts are happy to fit in with the guests. I am happy to come back anytime.
