Positive: Nice western standard hotel. Clean rooms. The female receptionist was extremely organised. Managed to check ourselves and a whole coach full of Australia's in 10 minutes. Organised a taxi to the border also.
Negative: A can of beer is £4. When you can get 6 for the same price from the supermarket down the road

Positive: Good breakfast. Cool staff, helped us get a taxi driver to Dushanbe. Standard room and bed.
Negative: There was no working light in our restroom. The hotel is located at the edge of the city, but with a taxi it is no problem. (A taxi costs about 200 Somoni)
Summary: I guess for Panjakent it is fine.

Positive: Staff are extremely friendly, especially the two front desk girls Benazir and Sabrina. They easily had the best English-language skills out of any of the hotel staff we encountered in our travels across Central Asia. They organised for us a day trip to the 7 lakes in a private car for 800 Somoni (this is well below the normal rate for a day trip to the lakes from Panjakent). As the driver didn't speak English, they even found an English-speaking guide (Kadir) to accompany us for no additional cost. They also arranged us 2 spots in a shared taxi to Dushanbe for 150 Somoni each (the rate that Tajik locals pay). All of these trips came with no mark up at all, and they organised all of this for us saving us the stress and hassle. For a hotel in a small stopover town on the tourist route from Samarkand to Dushanbe, this hotel is perfect. Contrary to what other reviewers have said, the hotel's location is excellent. Though not at a walking distance from the town's bus station, there is a shop right beside the hotel and supermarkets and restaurants are all within walking distance. In fact, the best qurutob restaurant in the entire Sughd region is located directly behind the hotel (it's not advertised well on Google maps but ask the reception staff and they will point it out to you) and the big dish costs only 20 Somoni and can be shared between 2. The number 1 marshrutka runs up and down Rudaki frequently (where the hotel is located) so you can easily head to the bazaar and the bus station for 2/3 Somoni at most. The number 5 marshrutka will also bring you to the Archaeological museum (well worth a visit). Also, it is important to mention, the hotel DOES have WiFi even though for whatever reason it is not advertised as such. The breakfast again is very reasonable for Panjakent considering its location. They also have an advanced coffee machine capable of making espressos/lattes/cappuccinos etc - a real rarity in Central Asian hotels.
Negative: Very, very minor issues. For a hotel with international guests, they did not seem to have black tea, which is quite strange. They also did not have coathangers which is again strange for a hotel with international guests. Also no safe either. Table lamp connections plugs were a bit faulty. They also have an issue with responding to messages sent to the hotel as Benazir explained to us they are passed to the head office and there is often a delay in the messages being passed on to the actual hotel staff.
Summary: Panjakent's best hotel.

Positive: The staff members speak good English and were friendly. The responded fast and solved the problems.
Negative: The room door opened tithe outside and the lock didn’t work well. We booked two rooms both with twin beds, but one was prepared as king bed. The water heater was not plugged, and when I plugged it in, the power outlet was not working. So I had to ask for help and the staff plugged it to the hairdryer’s outlet..
Summary: It can be better if they can prevent the problem from happening, instead of fixing it afterwards.

Positive: Beds were comfortable and the bathroom facilities were modern and in good order. Wifi worked well. Room was clean when we checked in.
Negative: I generally do not like to give bad reviews but in this case I feel that it's important others are made aware of the problems with this hotel. Unfortunately, the staff hired to operate this hotel appear not be motivated or sufficiently experienced to offer good service. When we checked in our to our room the heat was off, so the room was extremely cold (14-16 degrees; we were travelling to Panjakent in November). Even though we had made a reservation hotel staff did not turn on the heat ahead of our arrival and it took a long time for the room to warm up. We heard that other guests experienced the same problem. We were told that rooms are only cleaned every third day, so we had to re-use towels etc for the first two nights. Breakfast was poor with a lack of variety and poorly presented. For example, pomegranates were available but they were unopened and no sharp knife was available to cut them up. I was disappointed that the front-desk clerk (Kabir) overcharged me for my stay when I was checking out. The price of my room for the first two nights was set by Booking.com, and then I added a third night to my stay which was not reserved through the Booking.com website. When I went to pay, I was told by the front-desk clerk that the hotel bill was higher than what had been agreed to previously. While the amount overcharged was not large (USD12), I was nonetheless disappointed as I've never run into this problem before when arranging hotel stays through Booking.com. Finally, the hotel is not well-located. While I imagine it would be fine for tour groups who are dropped off and picked up in their tour bus, for anyone who wants to visit Panjakent, walk to a restaurant, etc this is not the place to stay, as you need to take a taxi to get to any decent restaurants or visit the centre of town.
Summary: Disappointing stay in Panjakent
