Positive: This was the most memorable stay on my Japan trip. The host was very lovely and welcoming. The chef prepared maybe the best vegan meals I’ve had on this trip. And, of course, the tea served with meals is excellent! I even tried the hot tea bath that was available each night. Also, the host has lived in the US so you don’t need to worry about a language barrier. I didn’t get to do the tea tours that were offered because I’d already booked one with Obubu Tea Farms, but will definitely take them up on the offer next time. If I’m ever back in the area, I will stay again!
Negative: It’s an old Japanese-style house so I could hear the nature through the rather thing walls while sleeping. You also couldn’t make the room entirely dark so bringing an eye mask was useful. The toilet and showers are in the shared space. For these reasons the price is on the higher side but the top-quality hosting makes up for it.
Summary: Lovely stay in a tea village

Positive: Ken and Kaz are awesome hosts. The property is well located and the dinners and tea tour are definitely worth it. great way to experience an authentic old school Japanese approach to living.
Negative: be aware that the futon beds are not very thick. So if you are on the heavier side or struggle to sleep on a firm mattress I would consider the western style beds.
Summary: inspiring

Positive: Exquisite hospitality, especially from Ken, who is an excellent host, with deep family roots in the area, and truly knows his tea. You stay in a converted farmhouse with an unbelievable tea field view out the window. Ken can arrange just about anything you need in the area, and he is a willing and caring concierge. The food on-site is excellent, at least on par with a good izakaya. Thank you Ken for a wonderful stay!

Positive: Our stay at Osugi-ya in Wazuka, Kyoto was nothing short of perfection. It exceeded our expectations by a thousand! We were enchanted by the serene beauty of the surroundings and the spirit of this 150-year-old Showa-era house. This is a true five-star gem, because every detail was thoroughly considered. The traditional tatami room was an absolute highlight. Sleeping on the futon was incredibly comfortable, and the minimalist aesthetic created a sense of calm and tranquility. The house itself, with its rich history, provided an authentic experience that made our trip so special. The presence of the house was strongly felt, alive and welcoming. The wonderful landscape of Wazuka, with its rolling green tea fields, rice fields, river streams, and misty hills, provided the most picturesque backdrop imaginable. It's a peaceful and stunning area that feels a world away from the hustle and bustle, especially for us city folks. Each morning, we were treated to a delicious, home-cooked breakfast that was beautifully presented and so delicious, made by a friendly chef every morning. The dishes were prepared with fresh, local ingredients and truly set a wonderful tone for the day. We are super tea nerds, so we also enjoyed sharing many cups of the local Wazuka tea with our host, Kazu, who shared stories and insights about the area, making it a culinary and cultural experience we'll be thinking about for a long time. It was the best tea we tried in all of Japan so far. Since Wazuka is a small town with a limited number of restaurants, a special home-cooked dinner is also available from the host. It's a wonderful option to experience another incredible meal, but you do need to order it ahead of time! The dinner there was one of the best meals we had in Japan. The true magic of our stay was the friendship we made with our host, Kazu.

Positive: I stayed in a traditional Japanese house, and it was a wonderful experience! The house was very clean, quiet, and peaceful. The hosts were kind and helpful—they spoke fluent English and were incredibly hospitable and friendly. I loved the tatami floors and sliding doors; it felt like authentic Japanese culture. Their breakfast was fantastic, with a beautiful view of the rice fields in Wazuka. Highly recommended!
