Positive: This family run onsen retreat is over half a century old and represents the spirit of Japan in challenging times. It seems the elderly parents are now only able to provide limited help and daughter is responsible for everything. The hospitality was endearing and homely. A knock on the door for meal times was such a personal touch. The food was delicious, with extensive Kaiseki evening meals featuring multiple sashimi items, as well as fish, shrimp, crab and vegetables in the most delicious broth ever, tempura, hotpot, steak, amazing rice and multiple trimmings. Breakfasts were mixed western and traditional dishes (maybe as I'm an international visitor) and filling. The onsen was skin-tingling hot and available 24 hours. I never made it past the "cool" end away from the inlet. It warmed my bones. The room was big and easily warmed with a view of the valley. Parking was immediately in front of the building. It's a beautiful valley with documented history to the late 1500's. No question, the best value for money of my holiday.

Negative: Probably due to the aging family, it is tired. Dining area cushions need to be replaced as do onsen/bathroom mats and the male toilet needs a spring clean. Doors don't slide well anymore. None of this stops me from loving the experience. It's like staying with your older relatives.

Positive: Very simple and comfortable small lovely old hotel. The service was good and the stuff helped us to wear Japanese kimono.

Positive: I really enjoy the location of the building. Its up on the hill and have a lot of privacy(trees) between the other buildings. It was an adventure everyday for me there. Either I go and pay my respect to the shrine, explore the area around of drive in the countryside which I really enjoyed. The food is so delicious and plentiful, I was so hurt when I couldn't finish my dinner.. The owner was so kind and I tried my best to help her understand me. I will come back again one day and would be able to communicate better!

Negative: Me personally I have arachnophobia, but if they weren't inside then there would be a lot more annoying insect. So that is genius on her part! Spider are needed to control the amount of insects in the area. Other than that, I cannot say that I didn't like anything else.
