Although Heraklion is a bustling city, the calm and picturesque countryside, only a few minutes away by car will take you back in time. In the region's villages you will enjoy authentic Cretan cuisine made with quality local olive oil and other local produce. A winery tour will allow you to experience the island’s wine-making tradition, going back thousands of years. During the day you can enjoy swimming and sunbathing in numerous sandy beaches lying in the north and south of the region. Heraklion is therefore a must stop during a multi-day island tour. ***What to do in Heraklion***
For history and archaeology enthusiasts the starting point of the tour is Knossos, the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete, also called Europe's oldest city. Ferry boat from Piraeus port (Athens) to Heraklion: Daily high speed ferries to Heraklion operated by Anek/Blue Star and Minoan (about 9 hours travel time). They depart from Piraeus in the evening and reach Heraklion port at about 6 am.
