Positive: The only place I've deliberately booked twice, just because of how nice the first stay was. It is an old but beautiful building, right in the middle of a temple. Despite its age it offers just about any modern amenity you could wish for. However by far the best thing about this place is its owner. Just a wonderful lady all around, whose passion is caring for this abode and its guests. If you can book with breakfast, please do! It is a home-cooked traditional Japanese breakfast, made fresh every day. I even got it for free, because she forgot to tell about the pick-up service and she felt bad that I had to walk.

Negative: Nothing! The perfect stay. I will say, that the location is not central and if you have problems with walking up stairs this might not be the place for you. Also they have shared showers/bathrooms, as is common in such "minshukus".

Summary: The only hotel I went out of my way to book a second time

Positive: An absolutely picturesque experience in every conceivable manner. The room was extremely comfortable and calming, while providing that idealized image of traditional Japanese living that all travellers seek out. Breakfast was a delicious spread of local cuisine in a very generous portion size. The host, Yoko, was extremely kind and accommodating. My only regret is not booking more nights there than I did.

Positive: We liked the whole experience, the staff was very friendly and detailed. We got an in depth tour of the facilities when we started. The complimentary breakfast was also great. We did get lost on our first night trying to get to the location but a kind local showed us the way.

Negative: The futons were thinner compared to others we've already used which caused back ache probably because our body was not used to it.

Summary: A great minshuku stay.

Positive: Minshuku Hiroshiyama was absolutely fabulous. Firstly, the hospitality was perfect - achieving the balance of care, information, and contact with privacy and space to enjoy the amazing interior and views of Kumumoto from the room. Breakfast was outstanding. I would come back to Kumumoto just to stay here. Stunning location and amazing value.

Positive: Yoko-san is so friendly and welcoming. Her traditional family home, located right next to the temple is beautiful and very clean. Meals are not available but Yoko is clear in communicating this beforehand and encourages guests to eat in their rooms.

Negative: Be aware the toilet and bathroom are down very steep stairs.

Positive: The staff is super nice and offered to drive me from and back to the station. The breakfast is an amazing japanese breakfast with varying dishes from day to day. The location was very unique and I enjoyed waking up in a temple, however some might prefer being closer to the public transfer. The walk down and up is amazing though. I recommend to stay here warmly.
