Positive: I am extremely happy with my stay, not only because of how comfortable my room was, but especially because of how helpful my host, Bunda, was throughout my entire stay. He walked me through the village to show me where to buy local food, he helped me understand local prices and some basic Swahili phrases and words, he walked with me to nearby properties where I could access the beach, and he even walked along the beach all the way to the other side of Kilindoni with me to Juani! He called a boda boda (motorbike) for me when I had to get to Utende for scuba diving, and always greeted me when I arrived back at the property. He was there when I needed help or wanted company, but he was also kind and gave me space when I was looking for solitude. I felt very safe and welcomed as a solo female traveler.

Negative: This one small thing wasn't the end of the world for me, but it was still slightly disappointing - unfortunately, I think because the small fridge gets turned off occasionally to save on electricity (understandably), I had to throw away some leftover food that I stored in the fridge because ants got in and took over my food. I thought I had a tightly sealed container, but turns out the ants are small enough to find a way! Oh well - just keep this in mind if you stay here and store your food in the fridge! :)

Summary: 100% recommend this homestay to anybody, solo or a group, who'd like a local experience in Mafia!

Positive: I really liked and valued everything about Mgeni Homestay. Bcause it was my first time to come to Mafia Island, I was able to contact Mr.Ally (The owner of Mgeni Homestay) in advance and he was very kind to guide me all way from understanding how to travel from Dar-es-salaam to Mafia to buying the Ferry/Ship ticket until arrival at Mgeni Homestay. Upon arrival I was warmly received, registered my stay, paid and went to the cozy and beautifully clean room. I really enjoyed the delicious, numcious African breakfast that was served to me at Mgeni, ......in general I really had precious memories at Mgeni. I will surely return back to Mgeni when I go to Mafia.

Summary: AWESOME, WORTH EVERY PENNY and I WILL SURELY RETURN AGAIN!😊

Positive: Ally is the perfect host, very kind, helpful and responsive. He organized for a tuk tuk to pick us up at the airport on arrival and he called one for us anytime that we needed it. He’s also very helpful to organize tours and activities. Location is great, outside of the marine park area so there’s no tax to pay everyday and it’s where locals live. Close to the beach and a few min of tuk tuk to the airport area where there are a few nice places to eat, it’s also possible to go there walking, which we did every time, you just need the torch. Also not far away from the marine park by tuk tuk. Room is basic but exactly as in the pictures, pretty spacious and clean. There is no hot water but that honestly is not a problem at all considering the temperatures, besides, I think this is the same in pretty much the whole island. Breakfast is good and they are also very flexible on the time if asked. Value for money is great so overall it’s the perfect place to explore Mafia on a budget. Hope to come back. Asante sana!

Positive: The price is very very fair for what u get. The Toilet and the Shower work fine, the Fans in my room worked, the mosquitonet was whole. And Ally (the owner) and Bunda (the housekeeper) do everything to make the stay more comfortable. Both of them went out to buy me a ferry ticket because i was out diving that morning.. and it took hours of effort, they nearly failed because it was to crowed, but finally got me a ticket, which i am more that grateful for!! The breakfast Bunda is prepairing fresh for everyone is delicious! Its very close to the „city“, airport and port, and some restaurants are around as well.

Negative: The place doesnt have Wifi or Aircondition, but for the price you are paying that is nothing to be needed.

Positive: Great simple stay in the city. We only slept for one night here as we decided to move closer to our dive shop on the other side of the island. It’s a simple and cheap stay. Ally Mgeni is very responsive, he sent tuktuks to the airport to pick us up even without us asking.

Negative: Our attached washroom didn’t have a toilet seat which made it difficult for our female friend. This property is close to the airport on the west side of the island, we liked the east side more as the beaches were cleaner and more well equipped for tourists.
