Summary: We always stay here when visiting family who live close by. Hotel is beautifully situated and has a good size car park. Although rooms are looking a little tired, especially the bathrooms, it is always clean and the beds comfy. It could really do with having the rooms upgraded it would make the stay perfect. Good breakfast with plenty of choice.

Summary: My fault really for not appreciating the compromises that come with a country house hotel. The room was large and well maintained but having no air con and no proper ventilation in the bathroom meant it fell short of what I think a 4 star hotel is like. Breakfast was very good and the staff were very willing to help when asked.

Summary: Having done some painful damage to my knee, I arrived walking with a walking stick. I was put in a room up several flights of stairs and there is no lift (but they don't tell you that on their website). I had to drag my bags up while trying to hold onto the banister to pull myself up the stairs. I saw other guests struggling with bags on the stairs too. Yes, it was a hot night, but you could have almost cooked your dinner in the oven of a room I was put in, with only a small window and, being a hotel room with a closed door, obviously no through draught of any kind. A desk fan that barely moved a piece of paper around was my only source of ventilation, so I barely slept a wink, then had a 2o00 mile drive the next day. I have had many enjoyable stays in Mercure hotels in the past, but I won't be returning to or recommending this one. I even ended up not eating because of the trip up and down stairs again that I faced, and it was too hot in my room to sit eating there. I wouldn't normally give such a grim review of anywhere, and had some thoughtfulness of my mobility issues been forthcoming then I wouldn't be doing this now. The hotel looked tired and it was too expensive for what it was.
