Positive: A cool, calm and beautifully decorated house - we couldn’t recommend staying here more. Priyangy’s food was delicious, and Mayura told us so much about Sri Lanka, they were both so welcoming and wonderful to chat to. Best homestay of the trip!

Positive: Mayura and his wife are truly exceptional hosts who welcomed us like family. They generously shared their local knowledge and recommendations, and we spent wonderful moments laughing together. We dined with them twice, and both meals were authentically prepared and absolutely delicious. The property is nestled in lush greenery, with a beautiful outdoor space by the river, perfect for enjoying tea and unwinding. Our room and bathroom were immaculate and comfortable. We don't just recommend this place because we loved it, but because we consider it an essential stop for anyone wanting to experience genuine local culture and hospitality.

Positive: If you're visiting Kandy, stay at Mahaweli Shades If you don't particularly like staying in busy places, I highly recommend Mahaweli Shades homestay. It's near the city center, but next to the river and absolutely quiet (just the birds and frogs singing). A perfect blend between nature and civilization as I say. Just a few minutes walk to the supermarket! We planned to spend a night in Kandy, but because we arrived quite late, we decided to have two nights. First of all- I booked the dates wrong. They took us in anyway, because I only realized that when we were standing at their gates already. They have 3 wonderful dogs, a beautiful garden with many birds (and fish!!), hot water and they serve amazing food. We had breakfast and dinner every night there! We stayed in total 5 nights there and it was the best choice. Because of our lovely hosts Mayura and Priyangi, we have visited the Knuckles, hiked the Pekoe trail 1st stage and experienced the Kandyan culture in the city. If you like tasteful interior and vintage, you will absolutely love this place. I will not spoil too much!

Positive: The hosts were incredible, nothing was too much trouble for them. We had 2 absolutely wonderful home cooked meals plus fantastic breakfasts each morning. The house was spotlessly clean. The host was also a Pink Floyd fan so nothing more needs to be said 😁 Another massive plus were the 3 dogs and having wildlife quite literally on the doorstep. Mayure drove us up to Pidurangala Rock for a spectacular day. Overall our hosts were great company and were very gracious. Thoroughly recommended.

Negative: As a tall man I found the bed a little short and hard but that really is nitpicking.

Positive: It was perfect. Manyura and his wife are super warm, welcoming, and lovely. The breakfast was sooo tasty. They served something new each morning (Sri Lankan breakfast). We even had dinner with them once and it was honestly the best meal we had so far in Sri Lanka. The house (and the garden!!) are very beautiful and the room was clean and spacious. They also have three very nice dogs which are addicted to cuddles :-) All in all, the perfect stay, we would return anytime. Recommendation 10/10. Thanks again for having us (and also for giving us a ride to the train station). :-)

Positive: Lovely homestay located on the banks of the Mahaweli river. Lovely to be surrounded by nature and watch the numerous birds, monkeys and squirrels that live here. Great outdoor space if you just want to take it easy for a day. Nice and clean room with AC and mosquito net. Warm water and good water pressure. And finally a bathroom with a shower curtain so you’re not constantly getting wet feet when entering the bathroom. Lovely breakfast and upon request dinner can be ordered too. Sweetest hosts who speak English very well and are willing and able to help you plan for outings while staying with them. Very kind and caring for my almost two year old daughter. Highly recommend this place to each and everyone.

Negative: The only thing I was missing during our stay were some hooks to hang up stuff and maybe a longer or extra towel rack. The one that’s there now only properly fits one towel. But this didn’t in any affect our stay.
