Positive: The grounds are lovely and most of the staff polite and friendly and I got a decent nights sleep. There was enough space in the room, and plenty of rooms in the hotel to relax in. I didn’t try the restaurant, and frankly a price ticket of £40.90 for a continental breakfast didn’t tempt me to try it.

Negative: The room was rather tired and uninspiring although the view was good. A loose toilet seat and strange hole in the bottom of one of the drawers let it down a bit, as did the worn furniture. The tea making facilities meant carting the tray around to get access to a plug which was a minor annoyance. All in all there was a sense of faded grandeur. A cost of £5 to park in the almost empty car park seemed ridiculous, and should have been complementary - especially as there are no suitably close alternatives. The fact that there would be a fee wasn’t clear on booking, but an unpleasant surprise when I mentioned I would need a space. Indeed what traveller wouldn’t?

Positive: This is a hotel with a heart. It has character, the staff are exceptionally pleasant and helpful, it is immaculately clean and comfortable and there is a touch of old fashioned charm about it, in the best sense of the word. The food is excellent and altogether this is a gem of a family run hotel. So different from the boxy chains we are all sometimes subjected to!

Summary: Excellent value for money, i felt totally at home there as a single female and very well looked after.
