1 Bedroom Cottage in Vendee - Sevre - Autise, Le Coudreau Saint-Sigismond

This semi-detached holiday cottage has been completely renovated to a good standard by the owner. The original stone walls have been retained and there are also exposed beams and a cosy woodburning stove in the living room. It has a small sitting out area to the front, and a grassed area to the side. The owner lives nearby and will advise on places to visit in this lovely area on the Vendée side of the Marais Poitevin. Why not hire a canoe (payable locally), and explore the impressive local canal network, or visit the pretty villages, markets and beaches of the Vendée and Charente.

Climate:
Our region is blessed with an exceptional number of sunshine hours per year ( 2250). It is the sunniest region in Western France. Winter is mild and the mimosas flower as early as January; Spring comes early (and is beautiful) and, whilst Summer naturally sees most tourist activity, Autumn is still warm enough for the calmer main holiday.
The Coast:
The coast of the Poitou Charentes is one of the most popular with French holidaymakers, known for its long stretches of fine sand and good weather. The famous coastal town of La Rochelle is located in the Charente Maritime department. The old harbour and three medieval towers symbolise the port's rich history; there are lively quayside markets, trendy bars and excellent restaurants a-plenty Take a guided tour in a horse-drawn carriage, a boat trip to Fort Boyard or visit the fascinating aquarium The idyllic beaches of the Ile de Re (some 30km worth) are also within easy reach and the island is well worth a day's visit in its own right.
The Countryside:
The area is perfect for walking, riding and cycling The countryside is made up of rolling hills divided up into a patchwork quilt of sunflower and corn fields interspersed with fields containing cows and goats. The marais poitevin (or Green Venice) is a fascinating maze of rivers, dykes and tree-shaded canals which thread between meadows and fields. They cover an area of 230,000 acres from Niort and Fontenay-Le-Compte to the Atlantic ocean. The best way to explore is by boat, either with or without a guide. Visit, also, the Poitou donkey park at Dampierre-sur-Boutonne and marvel at this special breed of dreadlocked donkey!
Theme Parks:
Futuroscope, in Poitiers, is a collection of simulated visual spectacles, ranging from a white knuckle ride to journeys of dicovery in 3D to a magic carpet to a ride in a Formula 1 car. Puy du Fou is a huge medieval theme park with fascinating displays during both the day and the night. Marvel at the beautiful birds of prey, gasp at the stunt riders and take a step back in time in the vast roman stadium.
History:
The region's history could have been lifted from an adventure story book: visit medieval fortresses, roman churches, Renaissance chateaux, protestant temples, grand abbeys, ramparts, fortifications and dungeons. Across the region stand some 600 beautiful examples of the Romanesque sanctuary, a heritage which began around the 10th century with techniques born of the Christian Roman Empire
Food & Drink:
The food of the region is simple and rustic, the food of peasants, but created from the wonderful local vegeatbles, fruits, dairy produce and fish. Seafood has pride of place with mussels in white wine and oysters wrapped in bacon and grilled with garlic butter as two of the more famous examples. Eels flourish in the marshes of the Poitou and are eaten grilled on coals or stewed with onions, muhrooms, butter and white wine. Other favourites from the marshes are fricassed frogs legs or garlic-stuffed snails. The markets of the region are colourful and extremely interesting, there is no better place to buy your provisions; lamb, beef or seafood, melons from Haut-Poitou or vegetables from the coast. There are 50 or so goat's cheeses or how about a torteau fromager, a delicate cake made from goat's cheese with a crispy blackened top. Those with a sweet tooth can buy some candied angelica in Niort or taste a multitude of flavoured honeys in Coulonges market.

Summary: Lovely well equipped and appointed gite. We had a quiet week exploring an area, seamed with medieval waterways, that we first discovered when stopping overnight last year. Recommend a private guided boat trip on the canal backwaters round Coulon and a visit to Damvix, lower down on the river. We also visited the Ile de Re, beyond La Rochelle. Stunning bridge onto the island (peage). Quite a long drive but well worth the effort.

Summary: Well worth booking in here, house well appointed and very comfortable with all of the facilities you will need. We stayed there mid October and had very good weather so house very warm and no real need for heating, although it does have a proper log burner and electric panel heating. Lots of places to walk - use Google Maps - from the house and nearest small town by the river - Damvix - has good selection of restaurants and we walked there as well. Damiusz very kindly gave us some honey, champagne and wood for the fire and was a great and interesting host. Kitec his friendly red setter occasionally came to visit as we have a young golden retriever who was really happy there. House is in a small quiet hamlet, baker has van that visits four days a week about 8.00am, and good sized Intermarche about 15 mins drive away. Well worth staying at this house.

Summary: This gite has been renovated to a great standard. It is located in a very small rural hamlet, but is about 5 mins form a larger village with butchers and bakers. 10 mins from another with a supermarket and market plus a choice of bakers etc. 30 mins away is a small city with an historic old town and a wide range of shops. The area is the marais poitvins. It was a salt marsh and was drained hundreds of years ago leaving a massive network of fresh water canals. There are various opportunities to take a tour on the canals and we would recommend this as a relaxing activity. The coast is about an hour away and the endless beaches of the vendee are stunning. We would recommend faute sur mer as a beach destination. Unspoilt and in the middle of a stretch of beaches more than 20 miles long. Our host Mariuz and his lovely dog Kitec were fantastic and laid back. We were welcomed with a bottle of champagne . Mariuz also gave us some home grown veg. He lives just a few doors away so is available if you have any questions and is fluent in French English and polish. However he respects your privacy and his proximity is an asset not a deterrent. Kitec is a calm dog who will greet you several times a day, usually around meal times but is patient and not at all demanding should you choose to feed him the odd scrap. Across the lane is the garden of le chic. It has many fruit trees and we were lucky to be there when they were at the peak of ripeness. Daily portions of plums pears apples direct from tree to mouth. Can't get fresher. We have stayed in many gites in various areas. This definitely ranks level with the very best for value and beauty.

Summary: We spent 3 weeks cycling the quiet roads that take you through the marshes to lovely villages. The area has well marked cycle routes that also took us right into the heart of Niort, a lovely city. The gite was well equipped but if you want to eat out there’s a few good options at Damvix 2 miles away.

Summary: A beautiful little farmworker's cottage in the middle of some very scenic French countryside, in a tiny remotevillage. You really do need a car to get to the nearest supermarket, bars, and restaurants. Our favourite close village to visit was Damvix, a pretty riverside village, with 2 excellent bar/restaurants in the centre, near the Church. There are also two or three more pubs etc on the river, and nearby. Back at our Farm cottage, it is very comfortable, with many restored, original stone walls. The staircase to the bedroom, however is not for any disabled person. Enjoyed it very much, and will go again. Roaming Roland.

Summary: No one there on our arrival and we had to call on one of the neighbours as to where the house was situated. Since the original photos were taken of the house there are now blue shutters to add to the confusion. Very steep and lethal stairs to the first floor bedroom, far too many crockery items in the kitchen cupboards that were not necessary for a two person holiday home and overall very disappointing with overgrown front garden with pistachio shells left by the previous occupant. Vase of dead flowers outside the kitchen door which didn't add to the ambience at all. We saw the owner very briefly when my husband was walking outside the house but never once did he come back to see if everything was OK.

Summary: Lovely cottage, clean and well equipped kitchen and bathroom. English TV and powerful internet. The bedroom upstairs was modern and clean, the bed was a little creaky and the mattress a bit thin so uncomfortable for one of us. There was an area to BBQ with a charcoal BBQ available to use. Our host gave us champagne and honey which was much appreciated. Thanks for a nice stay Marius.

Summary: The property was delightful and very well equipped. Mr Kasak was extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble for him. We had very hot weather for the whole of the fortnight, almost too hot, but did get to see a lot of the area. We would definitely go back again.
