Positive: Highly recommend to anyone intrigued about the Valiyaparamba backwaters to check them out and stay at this homestay. Balin (alongside his wife and helper) was the best part about our stay. Not only did he make sure our stay at the hotel was comfortable, he really made sure we had a good time exploring the area. During our stay we borrowed a couple of bikes off one of his friends (he's hoping to replace his own soon which got rusty during COVID) - the island is really best explored by bike, a great way to see it. We also attended a local festival in the north of the island involving a huge processions. We caught Theyyams earlier in our stay in northern Kerala and there a plenty happening in these parts to - message Balin about linking your trip up with these, definitely worth going to see! Another suggestion by Balin was to take the 6am local ferry service to Kavvali (1 hour) where he organised for us to be met by Rahul of Kavalli Kayaks. We then spent 2 hours watching the sunrise and paddling around mangroves and islands. Then it's a cas e of having a leisurely breakfast at a decent cafe for the government ferry to come back and leave at 11.15am. We chatted over tea with Rahul, an extremely knowledgeable local guide who speaks excellent English and cares about the ecology and history of the area - worth getting in touch with him about tours etc, very down to earth. In terms of the accommodation itself, the breakfast was lovely, the room clean, strong air con, nice balcony overlooking well kept gardens and lake.

Negative: So we stayed 2 nights, first night little issue with mosquitos as the repellent had been on. Second night, not so good... So basically make sure to get the repellent on each day. WiFi didn't reach the room. Not really an issue as you get to sit on the balcony under a fan and use the WiFi there but something to note. Valiyaparamba and surrounding villages are great but none of the nearby food we tried was up to the usual Keralan standards - that said, more options for meat eaters and the breakfast was very nice at Lakeview. We didn't take a house boat in the end as a little pricey and they don't go into small waterways as much as the ones in the very busy allepy backwaters - on the plus side there's only a few you see bobbing along - think a 2 hour trip was 3500, there's one right by the homestay.
