Positive: Top class food, especially seafood. Our own cottage with veranda was great to spend time relaxing in. Vinu and family really made a big effort to make sure we got the best out of our stay, organising lots of trips. Highlights included dawn canoe trip in the backwaters and trip to the fish market, hanging bridges, temple in Kanhangad, kayaking, bell metal (lost wax) workshop. But the biggest highlight was the food - beautifully crafted and so delicious.

Positive: Exceptional homestay courtesy of a family team. Sasikaila is an outstanding chef serving some of the best food we've eaten anywhere in India. Shammu is a safe and skilled fisherman who took us on our backwater boat trip at sunrise and to the amazing fish market. Surprised to see a family of foxes on the river bank plus lots of kingfishers. He knows lots of people there and we were accepted as family as we wandered around admiring the big range of landed fish including a large marlin. He's got a good eye for buying good fish and prawns. Perfectively cooked by Sasikaila for lunch and dinner. Vinod is a great communicator on WhatsApp and took us behind the scenes at the Theyam, something we couldn't have experienced without him. He can source the coldest beer in Kerala. Krishna got us up to speed with everything cultural, educational and political in Kerala and did I say sunset from the beach is close by and we saw peacocks flying over the pond! A really magical couple of days here, highly recommended.

Negative: There's nothing to dislike, this is an exceptional homestay amongst local housing along the river and close to the beach.

Positive: Fabulous location , fantastic boat trips by Shammu. Lovely walks very friendly locals. Great trip with Vinu to see the Theyyam. Lovely meals prepared for us by Sasikala. Wonderful family hospitality and great conversations with Krishna. A sublime experience - very relaxing with your own private cottage.

Negative: Some suggestions to improve…the shower is poor. Bed side tables would be nice. Toilet paper on arrival so you don’t have to ask. Otherwise very nice

Positive: Everything was immaculate, the hosts were very accommodating and helpful for arranging rides, suggesting activities and anything else we could possibly need. Vinu was very patient with us even though we often arrived late. Krishna kept the property in order for us and would ask what our plans for the day were, suggesting activities if we weren't sure. The food was fresh every day caught by Shemu and cooked by his wife . She would make us something familiar paired with something new keep our minds and stomachs at ease. They would make us packed lunches for our outings and make sure we arrived at each stop safely.

Positive: - Food was really delicious, lots of seafood with flavours / sauces that I hadn’t tasted before. - The surroundings are very tranquil and peaceful with the lake. The days really do pass you by.

Negative: - Lots and lots of ants in the room! - Payment only by cash or bank transfer, and you will need to pay international transfer fees if the latter. - I recommend that you clarify the costs of everything before you agree to them (boat ride, meals etc.). I did not appreciate being given a bill that was nearly double the booking.com cost upon checkout. The cost was not so much the issue, it was that I was not made aware that they would charge me for certain things, even though I had asked (and was told they didn’t understand what I was asking) so felt a bit conned when they then asked for so much money on check out. - I also heard one of the men shouting quite aggressively to his wife (the really lovely lady who prepares all the meals) when I came to get some laundry. Made me feel a little uncomfortable.

Positive: Terrific location and bungalows with exceptional food (probably the best we had in a month in India). Vinod is a terrific host arranging and delivering us to Ayurvedic Dr and massage one day and taking us to ashram cave meditation, 2 temple poojas and a Theyyam the next. Shanmu is an excellent cook and backwater canoe pilot. River view on one side, ponds in the middle and 3 min walk to gorgeous deserted beach for 29’ water swims and beautiful sunsets. Wild foxes and peacocks added to the natural surroundings.

Positive: I had a very peaceful few days at Riverlap. Being close to the river and the sea, you couldn't ask for more. I look forward to being back some time soon. Yashoda and Shanmugam were fantastic in cooking and serving amazing local dishes - ended up eating all my meals in Riverlap. Hope to be back soon !

Positive: Riverlap is such an idyllic place. Its is perfectly located between the river and the sea. You can easily enjoy both. The homestay helps with organising a boat ride in the backwaters. Its perfect if you are looking for quiet, clean, very local place. The best thing : the food. In Riverlap we had chance to try many varieties of seafood, which was prepared in a very unique, local way. We absolutely loved it !!!

Positive: We had a wonderful stay at Riverlap Homestay. We were so well looked after by all the family. The location is beautiful, on the backwaters and only a few minutes from an amazing super quiet beach. The backwater trip was great. All the food was delicious, some of the best we've had during our stay in India.
