The Lazio region Latium, the cradle of Rome, consisted originally of the coastal plain from the mouth of the Tiber to the Circeian promontory, and its adjacent foothills. Its area constituted a part of the much larger modern Italian Regione of Lazio, Latium in Latin. Latium has played an important role in history owing to its status as the cradle of the Roman Empire and the city of Rome. Consequently, it is home to celebrated works of art and architecture. Bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea, Latium's capital Rome and the sovereign Vatican State, account for the region's, and indeed country's, largest number of visitorsβ€”lured by the staggering number of attractions within each. But outside of Rome's famous Colosseum and the Vatican's Sistine Chapel, Latium provides many attractions worth the wander from these busy centres. Info and contacts on: ILCASTELLANO . EU ;-)

Summary: We had a perfect stay in la Toretta. The house and garden are fantastic. From the pictures we expected it to be beautiful, but in reality it is even better. We went hiking, sight seeing (Rome), swimming (lake Turano), played Monopoly and football (there is a small soccer field on the grounds!), made friends with the cat that comes by every now and then, cooked delicious dinners in the well equipped kitchen, prepared breakfast at a different table with a different view each day, had a barbecue, took a book to one of the countless shady places in the garden, looked at the stars at night... our sons (12 and 15 years old) enjoyed it just as much as we did. We will come back, take our friends (to the neighbouring house Castellano) and stay longer!

Summary: We stayed for a week in La Toretta with our three small kids and had a beautiful time! After a four hour drive from Bologna in heavy rain we arrived really close to the house and were lost. But our host Giacomo was so kind to show us the last part of the way and made the arrival even better because he organized our breakfast for the next day ( which we couldn't since we were later then expected - the supermarkets were already closed). The house was as beautiful as described. After two days the rain stopped and we had a really good look at the surrounding of the house and it was just amazing - enough room for the kids to play and run and everywhere fresh flowers.... Perfect stay and the cold nights got warmer in front of the fire place! And the perfect spot to do some sight seeing - we went to Rome, to Tivoli and Pompeji. It could have been warmer but that's not something the house or our host could have changed ;-)! Next time we are planning on going to visit Italy we will go back to this perfect holiday house!

Summary: We have lost count of the number of times we have stayed at either Castellano or Torreta over the last 16 years, but it is certainly more than 15 times, several times taking friends with us. These have been for long weekends or upto 14 days, in winter, spring and late summer. We have never been disappointed. The tranquility of the site is wonderful, on the edge of Monteleone it is only a 10-15 minute gentle walk to the bars and limited shops of the old village - just sufficient to justify an early morning cappuccino or in the evening a cool beer or wine in one of the bars. The lovely garden is full of history, the amazing roman cistern and the tops of roman columns that have been placed as seats. The buildings themselves, the proximity of the amphitheatre remains and Santa Vittoria church all add to the character. Sat on one of the terraces looking down the valley over vines and olive trees, whilst food cooks on the barbeque below, is wonderfully relaxing. There is plenty of wildlife all around, we have seen black squirrels, hoopoes and on our last visit the field below the terrace was visited by wild boar on two consecutive evenings, splendid to see, if very timid. Both houses are comfortable and packed full of character, in winter we have grilled meat and vegetables over the open fire in the sitting room, which was huge fun. As a centre for exploring it is brilliant; there are many local places to visit (see webpage) but also getting into Rome is very easy either by train from Passo Corese which has a very good service, or for the braver by car down the A1 and then into Rome on the early part of the Via Salaria to the car park at Villa Borghese, which is only a 10 minute subway walk to the Spanish steps!

Summary: Thank you to my lovely husband for choosing such a beautiful place for my 40’s birthday surprise! Ta! Ya welcome! The photos don’t do la Torretta any justice. The surrounding areas are just as beautiful and relaxing. Lake Turano is just 35 minutes away and the scenery is a must see! When going to Rome, catching the train at Fara Sabina, don’t attempt to get tickets from station, Martin’s cafΓ© just reaching the station does an all day ticket for train/underground/buses for 6€. We’ll miss the roaming fine, the late night thunderstorms, the cat calling us for milk, the peace and tranquillity, and the distance from the real world to which we must return. Thank you Giacomo for sharing la Torretta with us. Warrington, Cheshire

Summary: This place is simply amazing! I spent one week with my girlfriend in this old style (but perfectly working) country house. The place is super quiet, everything's peaceful and relaxing, surrounded by the green hills. At the same time you're not far from Rome (like 1.5 hour by car) and other small beautiful places in the area, including a lake where you can actually go swimming. The owners are extremely nice and kind. They helped us looking for some great eating places, giving us suggestions without being invasive. This place is perfect for a family and for a couple who wants to spend some romantic and relaxing time together. I would love to go back there immediately!!!
