Positive: Room was very nice, with tatmi and a small balcony area - I liked it. I also liked the decoration in the lobby, and the location of the hotel.

Negative: The onsen was horrible! Actually, coming to Takeo Onsen - you expect nice and decent onsen, but this place has a very dirty and moldy onsen - quite disgusting - I was very appaled, and ran away from it. It was not maintained, exposed pipes, mold on the walls (especially in the outside space), no plants or soft decoration, no running water (as need to be in an onsen!), just poor, old, unmaintened space. Avoid the unbelievable poor onsen in this hotel! Shame. If you still want to stay here for the nice room and good location - use the onsen up the street in Saginoyu - beautiful rotenburo and great facilities.

Summary: Nice hotel, nice rooms, very poor onsen - not to be used!

Positive: The staff were excellent and sincerely tried to welcome me to Takeo onsen (e.g. room upgrade). I only stayed one night to break the trip en route to Nagasaki, although I really enjoyed exploring the city. Access to the extensive, easily accessible on-site onsen facilities was memorable, as was the personal tour of the many historical items in the foyer. The building and facilities are older, although well built, and that's part of the charm of this Retro experience. The morning breakfast was an excellent addition, as were the yukatas. The locals were very friendly and helpful, even by Japanese standards, imho.. it may be something in the water!? ;).

Negative: Nothing comes to mind. If I'd have planned this day stopover en route, I'd have organised bike or scooter transport that would've made exploring this great area even better.

Positive: Really interesting design of the place, they could almost open the place as an exhibition or museum. Private onsen was nice.

Negative: It's a bit rundown, lots of small issues here and there. Parts of the hallways randomly closed and used as storage or something

Positive: The breakfast was described as "bread service," but it was a wonderful continental breakfast served in a beautiful setting. The free coffee in the lobby that is furnished with antiques was great.

Negative: The hotel and the room is quite dated but has its own charm. The A/C needed to be replaced.

Positive: Every thing was exceptional. Has an onsen on property. The ground floor decor was unique, exceptional and so relaxing. We choose the Japanese room They have coffee in lounge area that you pick the cup and saucer And they serve a light breakfast free of charge

Positive: I couldn't find a hotel room for the night, and feel blessed and lucky to have found Kyotoya. It is set in a great area close to the station, Takeo Onsen and not far from all the sights. On entering you will find a beautiful lobby full of antique furniture and a great area to have tea and coffee and enjoy the atmosphere. The traditional tatami room was wonderful, the futon and pillow comfortable, and of course there is the onsen on the second floor to relax and refresh yourself on your travels. I loved the place and would absolutely book again. The staff were helpful and friendly and very patient with my poor level of Japanese. Don't hesitate to stay here if your looking for a much more special experience than your regular hotels within the same price range.
