Positive: The hotel was lovely with an assortment of fascinating artifacts such as suits of armour and a stuffed polar bear! The staff were very friendly and helpful. We were cycling and were able to lock our bikes in their garage. The terrace looks out over the start of the Rhine; it was a lovely place for an evening drink or breakfast.

Negative: We hadn't paid for breakfast in advance and I don’t think the hotel staff were expecting us to attend on Wednesday morning. We made the mistake. What was left was paltry. It turned out to be expensive for the fayre on offer. With hindsight, I think things might have been better had we booked breakfast in advance especially as the hotel closed early on Wednesdays.

Positive: It’s a beautiful building, with many original features and a museum on level 1. The bedroom was spacious and comfortable and the view was beautiful. It’s very central and we walked to the local Christmas markets which turned out to be one of the best ( and least crowded) we’d been to in the many towns we had stayed at in Germany. The staff were very friendly. It was a little unusual that the day after we arrived, it was the staff’s day off and so we were entrusted with the key to the hotel… it was very convenient for us, and we didn’t mind- just glad the staff trusted us!

Positive: Very pretty old building in great location, right on the Rhine. Very convenient for old centre of Stein am Rhein. Attractive, beamed rooms with modern bathrooms, and lots of antique artefacts in public areas.

Negative: Arrived by bike in torrential rain, soaked to skin to find hotel closed until 16.00. Had to seek shelter elsewhere for an hour. Odd for a 3 star hotel. Breakfast buffet was meagre and underwhelming compared to other hotels. Hotel restaurant expensive.

Summary: Pretty hotel, but not a great welcome.
