Positive: We stayed two nights at Hotel Keyforest Hokuto and really enjoyed our stay. Designed by architect Atsushi Kitagawara, the building is striking and ultramodern, made of concrete and glass, surrounded by beautiful countryside. Inside, everything is western in style with wood floors and clean, minimal design — no tatami mats or sliding doors. Our room was very spacious with two large single beds, a sitting area, a closet, and a big balcony with lounge chairs. The bathroom had a large glass-enclosed bathtub with a view of the trees, a separate shower, and a separate WC. Everything felt modern, stylish, and exceptionally clean. Breakfast is served either in the lounge or in the room. It is a fixed set menu combining Japanese and Western elements — croissants, yogurt, fruit, salad, soup, and a freshly made omelet, plus juice and coffee or tea. The food was fresh and of good quality, though it was the same on both mornings. Dinner is served at the neighboring steakhouse operated by the same owner. Guests with half board enjoy a four-course menu of very good quality, mainly focused on steak, which was perfectly prepared. A pescatarian option is available upon request. The atmosphere is rustic, steakhouse-style, and the service was friendly and attentive. It was also convenient to simply walk across from the hotel. Our personal highlight was the private onsen in the forest. It can be reserved for 60 minutes and offers two large open-air baths surrounded by trees. The natural hot spring water felt wonderful and relaxing, and soaking under the night sky was an unforgettable experience.

Negative: Coffee is not a strong point of the hotel. There is no coffee machine in the room, only drip coffee bags with a cocoa aroma, and the coffee served at breakfast and as a welcome drink was rather weak. The whisky bar displays an impressive collection, but the actual drinks available are limited and not as outstanding as one might expect from the display. Lastly, the motion sensor in the toilet area automatically activates light and music at night, which we did not manage to turn off and found a bit disruptive. Overall, Hotel Keyforest Hokuto is a remarkable design hotel in a quiet rural area, offering spacious rooms, excellent service, and a truly unique private onsen experience.

Positive: Exquisite six room hotel in the countryside. Shuttle will pick you up at the station if you are not driving. Quiet, calm - perfect to get away from the hub bub of Japan's big cities! It is a splurge but the rooms are huge and beautiful. There is a private hot spring for the use of guests only - it is outside and the water is truly mineral saturated. We went once before dinner and once in the evening which was magical. Breakfast is included - delicious and served in the bar area or in your room. There is a restaurant next door that is associated with the hotel - "western" themed because of the horse riding vibe and the food was delicious. And finally, the added bonus is the Keith Haring Museum beside the hotel - spectacular building and collection. All in all the Percy was to spend two nights to relax and recharge...which we did.

Negative: We were a bit off season so the roof deck was not set up and looked sad.

Summary: If you want a splurge in rural Japan away from the big city scene this is the place to go off the beaten path.

Positive: We had a lovely 1 night stay. The staff were all very welcoming. I was disappointed to find out that the Keith Haring museum is currently closed for a new installation, and sensing my disappointment, the gentleman on reception kindly gave me a book to take home. The hotel itself oozes quality.

Negative: We had dinner at the associated restaurant and to be honest, the quality of food didn’t justify the prices being charged. My husband enjoyed his steak, but my lamb chops, and our prawn starter were both cooked a little more than we would have preferred; nothing to complain about, but if it were local we wouldn’t return.
