Positive: I liked how nice the place was. The staff were plenty nice and the facilities are pretty modern for what I would expect from a hotel that was made in the 60s. The size of the room was also pretty large for a typical hotel and I really enjoyed my stay.

Negative: I didn't like that the location was on top of a hill. Although this can be mitigated by using a rental scooter or bike. It's pretty difficult to go up the hill specially when you're not fit and carrying a lot of luggage.

Summary: Pretty nice place at an amazing value

Positive: I think that, in general, the hotel is passable, because the ryokan style is pretty cool. The staff is very gentle, nice, and they were always very keen on helping us despite the language barrier. Their English was good enough to communicate with, and some of them know some Spanish, which also helps. Breakfast was OK if you're keen to try a Japanese-style breakfast.

Negative: They have a big problem with the cleanliness of the rooms, especially the toilet and bathroom. Both are very old, and mould can be seen in many parts. But the major downside for us was the cigarette smell. Even though we stayed in a "non-smoking" room, the place stinks of cigarettes, especially during the night. We stayed on the second floor, so we think the smoke came in from the lounge or the third floor, which is the smoking rooms level.

Positive: Very retro and classically Japanese. The staff were friendly and the facilities were great! Loved the open air bath and breakfast.

Negative: Japanese futons can be a bit stiff.

Positive: I wanted the traditional japanese room for at least one of my hotel stays, so I booked this hotel because it was 10-12 minute walk from Ueno Station. The bed was awesome, room was more than enough for one person and the breakfast was delicious! Please inform the chefs about the delicious breakfast.

Negative: The sauna and hot bath not being available in the AM but I understand they need to be able to clean everything from daily use, so you will have to plan your spa time for the afternoon/evening/late night
