Positive: The place is ran by a lovely couple, Penka and Georgi, who are kind and helpful with great recommendations for the area. They make breakfast and dinner for all the guests every day so you get to try lots of typical regional meals - all of it is really fresh and tasty and we enjoyed having a bit of surprise and variety. Also, there is home-made wine - great to try and very enjoyable to drink. The room was very homely, and spotlessly clean. It was a pleasure to arrive to. The bed did not look robust (I’m sharing it with a very large man!) but it was blissfully comfortable and supportive - so if you see thin frames and mattress in pictures and think it might not be comfortable, know you will be pleasantly surprised - no rattles and worked for 2 different sized people sharing. The shower had great pressure. The owners have a very friendly dog who came on walks around the local areas with me when my partner was taking time out - a great bonus four-footed hiking companion who helped me spot animals and interesting things to look at. You can access trails/track roads on foot from the guesthouse, so you can venture into the woods without a drive or major planning. For arriving, the road up to the guesthouse is bumpy, so it’s good to drive and be able to take it at a speed you’re comfortable with, or the guesthouse owners can meet you at the main road and drive you in. Makes for a super quiet place with no through traffic.

Negative: It’s great for smokers - you can sit on the long wooden balcony and smoke with beautiful Mountain Views. Unfortunately we aren’t smokers so the fumes into our room at times were a bit irritating.

Summary: Magical place to stay in remote Balkan Mountains.

Positive: It’s like a little piece of heaven on earth. The location is amazing, the hosts are exceptional and they cook so well, that it’s worth it going there just for the food. There are also a bunch of cats and a super friendly dog that always accompanies you when you go for a walk in the woods. This is probably the best place we have stayed at!

Positive: It was literally inside the forest ! The peace , tranquility and just the vibes of this place are absolutely beautiful! Their dog Bertha is an angel on earth - absolute sweetheart! The cat ‘Matsa’ is the boss cat and also very lovable! Nero was my favourite!

Positive: The owners of the place are nice, accommodating people. I had a phone reception and the wi-fi was enough for the rudimentary things like sending messages, but it took some time to send/receive files. My husband was using his paid data to work remotely. Food was very tasty, albeit we are used to bigger portions, especially for breakfast. Thankfully one can order some more food from the menu. We stayed just for a few days, so we were fine with that. It's nice that we were able to have a vegetarian choice of dishes (for the dinner included in the stay) - they were really thoughtfully prepared and tasted great. Sashko is a nice cook! We loved the animals - especially Berta who stole our hearts and who was accompanying us on our daily walks. But all the 4 cats were also wonderful to have around. It's very green, refreshing and cool there during the summer, and one can enjoy walking a lot among the amazing beech forest and along the mountain spring(s).

Negative: As many others mentioned, the road to reach Verbena is difficult (but definitely doable) :) It is a lot of ruts within stones and old asphalt, sometimes it is just stones and hard, clay road (?) - we needed to carefully maneuver using the 1st gear to avoid the bigger stones and deep unevenness (we had a rented Renault Clio 3). We are not much of people persons and shy away from spending time close to others, so it was a bit difficult, as Verbena seems to be a popular destination and there is a limited space at the property to hang around on your own - one will always encounter somebody. For a few days that's ok for us, especially when you can have those nice, long walks outside. Nights were calm and quiet, but the wooden structure of the house made all the morning commotion of other inhabitants very audible and because I am very sensitive to sounds, I couldn't sleep very well (even though I had my earplugs).
