Positive: The bed was comfortable and the pool was great and very clean. The garden was also nice, with sounds and sightings of birds and frogs. The living room and kitchen are spacious, with a nice dining table.

Negative: On booking.com the ad said full apartment with a private kitchen and bathroom. I had accidentally booked the apartment for 1 person, so I texted the owner over WhatsApp and agreed to pay double the price for two people as it was fair and it was my mistake. When we arrived at the property, it turned out that instead of an apartment, we got a room in a house with shared kitchen and facilities. The walls of the bedrooms do not stop at the sealing, there is an open space connecting to the common area, not offering much privacy. When I told the owner over the phone (the owner was not present during our stay) that the advertising on booking.com was incorrect he got very defensive, saying that he is offering good prices. This is however not the point, the point is that when people are looking to book a private apartment, they should be able to trust the description on booking.com. Moreover, the price of the apartment was stated in USD and the owner initially wanted us to pay in USD, but when the on site manager could not get the settings of the payment machine to USD, they wanted us to pay in the local currency, using a very bad exchange rate, which again let to a confrontation. Overal, the cleanliness was good especially de pool/terrace and the bedroom, but there’s room for improvement in the kitchen. There were dead flies in the drinking water dispenser that were not cleaned before changing the bottle for a new one, so we bought our own water. The hand soap dispenser in the kitchen was filled with dishwasher powder and water instead of actual soap. The sponge for doing the dishes had not been replaced and was falling apart. There were old pieces of sponge in the box of dishwashing powder. No towels to dry the dishes. Finally, on our last day we got a text from the owner saying that the check out is at 10am and we should leave by then because he has new guests. On booking.com however, checkout was stated between 11am and 1pm.

Positive: I’ve stayed one week in the wonderful Guacamayo Azul integrating my journeys in the jungle, and seriously, I have no words how amazing this place is! The house is luxurious, huge comfortable main bedroom, fully equipped kitchen where I felt I could cook as if I was back home. The pool is another sort of privilege; calm and safe location, comparing to the rest of Iquitos. Julio, the housekeeper, would help me with absolutely everything I needed - driving me to do buy groceries, help around the house, even accompanying me to explore the local area’s gems so I don’t feel uncomfortable as a solo female traveler. A special thanks to him! The house is massive and would fit a company up to 8 people, but also it’s an incredible stay for a solo person, who seeks quietness and solitude, like in my case. I truly appreciate my time in Guacamayo Azul, and it only leaves me to wonder why it’s not yet fully booked. I wish you that!

Negative: From the booking.com page, I was under the impression that the entire house would be mine, very important because I had just completed an intense 2 week retreat in the Amazon and was looking forward to this time to be in peace, quiet, and healing. However, I was informed the night before, that there was going to be a party. So the following day, there was a party of about 12-15 people, with music so loud I stayed in my room with noise canceling headphones in due to extremely loud music and no glass in the windows (just screens). The host was very apologetic and offered compensation, which I appreciated, however I would have booked different accommodations had I been given the knowledge that there was going to be a party held where I was staying. I am uncertain if I booked the entire house for myself. Booking.com reached out to the host, but got no response. If privacy or quiet are important to you, or you are expecting the house to yourself, I would double check with the host, just to make sure. Also, the mosquitoes at bedtime were pretty hungry; I slept with the fan blowing directly on me and that helped.
