Positive: Cute house at the top of a hill, very 'old worldy' - quiet and out of the way. Spacious home, and comfortable.

Negative: The property was on the humid side, which made it hard to dry clothes after a day out. It is quite a trek to the top of the hill, so if you're not fit (which, thankfully we were) you'll be spending a lot on taxis.

Positive: We liked that we had the whole place to ourselves, the host was very helpful, the location was not touristy

Negative: It was a challenging drive to the top of the mountain! Once there we were not inclined to drive down especially at night. It just meant we had to plan our day more carefully.

Negative: We loved everything about our stay. It’s up the hill from Varenna and taxis can be difficult to find but Cristina provides a list in the house!

Positive: The apartment was very nice with good facilities. There was a well-equipped kitchen, lots of room in the bedroom for storage, and a washing machine in the room. The host was very helpful in advance with planning our arrival and access to Varenna and other services. She was very prompt and helpful whenever we had questions while we were there.

Negative: The one item to note is that the apartment is located at the castle up the hill from the city of Varenna. There is a restaurant at the castle and the view is beautiful. If you do not have a car, it's a steep walk down/up between the town and the castle. It took us about 20 minutes to go down and 15 minutes to go back up. If you have a car, there is a parking lot close to the entrance which is very convenient. If you do not have a car, we suggest getting the WhatsApp contacts for a few taxis in Varenna. We discovered that while it's hard to get a taxi when needed, it is much easier to make reservations ahead of time through WhatsApp. We ended up with one driver we used for most of our stay.

Positive: Cristina is a wonderful host. Very attentive and helpful. She even gave us some delicious homemade fig jam. The house is very quaint and clean, and the location is tucked away on a pedestrian only street on the hillside above Varenna.

Negative: The foot path down to Varenna is very steep. So once we walked down in the morning, we didn't come back up until after dinner. The wifi and mobile reception are not the greatest. The connectivity varies from good to non-existent.

Positive: The bed was comfortable and I enjoyed having a long bath (although it took a long time to fill up!).

Negative: I arrived late because some strikes in Milan delayed the pick-up time for my rental car. I kept the host updated, so she knew I'd been on the road for a long time when I arrived. Yet she seemed so surprised when I asked if there was somewhere nearby to get food (I'd seen on a past review that she'd organised a pizza delivery for someone). I'd asked her if I should stop on my way to get drinking water, because I've stayed at places on the Lake before where they say not to drink the tap water, and she said no, but didn't mention there'd be nowhere to get food without driving 20 minutes back the way I came, down some very windy, dark, narrow mountain roads. The wifi didn't work at all - I could barely even load WhatsApp messages - and while I was grateful to find a fan in the bedroom because it was still quite warm, the fan turned off for some reason whenever I turned off the main light switch, even though it was plugged in on the other side of the room. These are all seemingly small things, but they add up. And given the high price for this accommodation, I'd expect better service & amenities.
