Positive: The house is so beautiful! The location is great, although the surrounding area (streets) is still under construction so it can be rough terrain to walk through to the main village if you are not able to walk well. Spectaculair view of the sea and the waves crashing on the rocky coast. Breathtaking! House is clean and well maintained. Garden too. Multiple rooms are rented out and you share the kitchen, living room and outside area with swimming pool. The coast in town has a little beach but is more a place where the locals put there fishing boats in the water. Sometimes someone swims there and that is possible but it is dark brown beach sand and quite big waves, so we didn’t swim in the sea there. If you rent a car somewhere you would be able to visit other places in the island from Cidade Velha. Staff very friendly and stay out of your way. We didn’t take the breakfast, but there is the possibility. The caretaker showed us the way to the village and the small supermarket shops for some groceries. There isn’t much available, but Praia is very close by (you can take a local white transportation van for only a euro into Praia on the main road) and it is a very nice place to stay away from the big town. We stayed in multiple places in Santiago and thought this was the most beautiful location to stay in the island.

Negative: There was hardly any water pressure and there didn’t seem to be hot water. Not in the kitchen or in the shower.

Positive: the breakfast was faboulus! A lot of fresh local fruits and drinks. Mamadou our host was very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our stay a lot, our daughter (7y) loved it as well.The pool was super nice and the view so beautiful. Everything was very clean.

Positive: Absolutely everything especially Mamadu, who looks after the house!!! For the very first time I was travelling on my own and I did enjoy every minute! House is absolutely beautiful with amazing views from the patio and sitting area which is pretty much at the swimming pool. There are so many plants around that you feel like in a jungle literally, but that my kind of house. Peace and quiet area ... except for the roosters, but I did love it as well, as brought me back to my childhood when I grow up in the village. And the most important factor why I did love this place so much is that I was on my own, so all house was to myself!!! Fortunately, Mamadu was there any time I did need anything!

Negative: As much as I love the house itself, outside the door is not very nice area and not very comfortable surrounding for walking even - no footpaths leading to main road and you are walking on the gravel and building site literally. However it is very safe and people would say hello even though you are alien to them. Very nice people after all and even kiddies at age 3 will send you kisses with sweet "ola"!

Summary: Best holidays ever, even though not perfect! But what/where in the world is perfect?!

Positive: The accommodation seems to be a bespoke development with separate owner, guest and manager rooms. A very relaxed place to stay with impeccable attention to needs of guests. I booked this accommodation for my wife and I as I wanted to show her the sunset from the beach at Cidade Velha. I had been to Cidade Velha once before, though never stayed. We wanted to explore this historic village. We spent two nights here at Cactus. I was in touch with the host prior to arrival and they were happy to arrange a private taxi from the airport and purchase a bottle of wine and some beer. They set up a small table overlooking the rocks below so we could watch the sunset on our first night. Breakfast was excellent with fresh food and set on a table overlooking the pool. We were lucky as we were the only people staying these two nights. A lovely place and lovely people.

Negative: I’m not writing this as a dislike, more to set the scene and manage expectations. Cactus Guest House is located in a small residential area just to the east of Cidade Velha. A small walk into the village. The sea view from the pool and terrace area is amazing. The area is very quiet and dimly lit. So walking into village can be tricky, so a torch is handy as rocks are loose underfoot in places. The host showed us the way on our first night and it was easy to find our way back. That said, we did get slightly lost on the second night. Maybe worth dropping a pin in your favourite map app at the front door as many of the streets look the same in the dark. Being remote, it would be better to ask Cactus for an airport transfer so the driver knows where to go. I’m guessing taking a taxi from the airport may be challenging for the driver to find Cactus? Our room was basic though very clean and tidy. There was a mosquito net above the bed and although no mosquitoes during our stay, maybe pack some Deet? We had nothing to complain about.
