Please note: The headroom is low from the stairs onto each floor level of the property. There is a fenced stream in the garden 20 yards away.. This is an extraordinary place, merging the history of a 500-year-old building with contemporary, high-end comforts. It is like time travelling, but Braidwood Castle also offers Wi-Fi, a dishwasher and a fabulous en-suite master bedroom right at the top of the tower. Braidwood Castle is in a class of its own, a rare gem owned by the same family for 350 years, but however tempting it sounds, please be aware that the stairs are steep and narrow, and a stay here would not be advisable if you would usually prefer to take the lift! Orchard Cottage set beside the tower (ref UK10671, sleeping 2) would be a more suitable choice.
Set in the lovely Clyde Valley and also known as Hallbar Tower, Braidwood Castle has a venerable history, being built around 1581 as a fortified tower to protect the Douglas family and neighbours from Border Reivers, and it still is a refuge of peace today. The tower was restored with enormous care and attention to authentic historical detail throughout this ancient building, and the great hall has a unique, painted ceiling.
The somewhat austere exterior has crow-step gables, narrow windows and an external parapet walkway with fantastic views over the Braidwood Burn and the surrounding countryside. The tower was designed, of course, for that very purpose of giving early warning of unwelcome visitors!
Very effective electric central heating helps maintain this ancient stone building and is very cosy for visitors too. A steep stone staircase with deep treads, built within the 1.5-metre exterior wall, connects each floor with the kitchen/dining room and a toilet on the ground floor. The kitchen/dining room has a stone floor, a barrel-vaulted ceiling and is fully equipped. On the next floor is the great hall, which has a low (5ft 6in) doorway, a huge original fireplace with a wood burner and it is beautifully furnished with period oak furniture and lovely fabrics. The painted ceiling shows heraldic motifs, flowers and beasts of the forest, reflecting the fact that hunting was an everyday pursuit 500 years ago. Just imagine an evening in the peace and warmth of this special room, then going up onto the battlements to look at the moon and stars. The bedrooms are on the next three floors, and include a pretty single room and well-appointed bathroom above the great hall. There is also a spacious twin bedroom with a wash hand basin, period furnishings and a vaulted ceiling. Finally, the master bedroom, at the top of the tower, is reached by going out onto the parapet walkway; it has a good sized shower room and lovely period furnishings.
The surrounding enclosed 1½-acre grounds comprise native woodland, and an orchard with a seating area which is shared with guests in Orchard Cottage. A walk leads to the River Clyde directly from the grounds. The central location of this historic tower house enables easy access to some wonderful countryside in the Clyde Valley Woodlands National Nature Reserve just north of Lanark, 5 miles, where there are way marked trails to explore, while at the UNESCO New Lanark World Heritage Centre on the magnificent Falls of Clyde, you can discover how life was lived at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Youngsters will love a visit to the Clyde Valley Family Park close by, or enjoy a day in Glasgow which is very easy by train from Carluke. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant ¾ mile.

Summary: This was such a unique property to stay in for our vacation. It was a perfect location to serve as a home base from which we were able to make our daily sight seeing trips. The castle provided such a memorable experience that we will remember it for a very long time. Didn't mind the low doorways or many steep narrow steps. All part of the experience. Would certainly stay here again the next time we are in the country for a visit.

Summary: Well what can I say? I have fallen in love with Hallbar Tower (Braidwood Castle) After years of seeing ruined tower houses and private ones we were so excited to have found this one to rent. To say that we were excited was an understatement and we weren't dissapointed. The location is great for exploring the Clyde Valley but the star of the show I'd the Tower, perfectly restored, yes you are going to crack your head on every door frame if you are over 5ft tall and curse, but this does not detract from the absolute delight of staying in the property, and yes the stairs are very steep but you will get used to that, at the end of the day it's a 16th century fortified tower house. The 'garret' bedroom is a delight and to climb the stairs at night and then to stand on the walkway and stare at the stars before entering the warm cosy bedroom was delightful and the shower in the ensuite was terrific. As you might have gathered by now, we loved the place, just remember to leave things where you need them as to leave your glasses on the top floor when you are in the kitchen is a pain. The welcome basket was lovely, the only thing missing would be some milk in the fridge on arrival for a cup of tea on arrival. Would I stay here again? In a heart beat.....

Summary: Great castle - it was such an exciting holiday for us as a family - I was a bit worried about our young one (3yrs old) managing the stairs as they were steep and of course - stone, but he aced them! My kids loved the adventure of being in a castle and the surroundings were idyllic. My only suggestion perhaps for improvement is if somehow the crumbling mortar in the kitchen could be controlled as there would be bits of the stone on the cooker etc. so it needed cleaning each time and my children were a bit worried about something dropping into their dinner ha ha! But that's what you get for a building old and with history - so no grumbles at all!

Summary: Loved the castle but it's definitely not the place to stay if you don't like climbing steep and narrow stairs!

Summary: Spectacular place to stay. My 3 kids (13,11 and 9) loved it. Complimentary basket of food and bottle of wine on arrival which was a very nice touch. Stairs are very steep and narrow and watch out for the low doorways but these retain the character of the building. We used it as a based to explore Edinburgh and Loch Lomond and surrounding areas. I would also recommend the Station Inn and La Piazza as places to eat in the evening for families.

Summary: Had a great time! The accommodations were comfortable other than the obvious steep stair climb, which was already mentioned in the literature on line. Would recommend this as adventure in an old medieval tower fortress castle. Was also cool to know my ancestors built this centuries ago.

Summary: The castle is amazing and a very challenging stay (stair climbing). Don't forget too duck and don’t forget to bring things down from your rooms or you will have a big climb back up to fetch it. We had sore heads and a sore eye but the stay was amazing the castle is perfect.

Summary: braidwood castle is stunning, has a very well equipt kitchen and peaceful location. may not be suitable for very young or old due to layout and 5 flights of very old stone steps. but if you are looking for something a little bit different with charm and character you wont go wrong with this property.
Mar 1, 2019 08:00:00 AM
Summary: Definitely one for the fit and active- but if you are that, then this is a wonderful place. Owing to the nature of the historic building, kitchen is cramped, so don't plan a dinner party, but perfectly adequate for family of 4
