Positive: The Hotel offered excellent service via incredibly polite staff. The authentic Japanese room was a pleasure. Both breakfast and dinner were amazing. One had to embrace Japanese food though particularly for Breakfast. Use of a private Onsen was and added bonus.

Positive: Silky onsen water. Delicious meals. 2x Private onsen (Wood+Rock style) without reservation from 1500-2300. Just take the key and use it for up to 40min. Comfortable room. Tastefully decorated common area. Free coffee and various kinds of tea at the lobby.

Negative: Room is a bit outdated. The towel in the room wasn't clean. Not much to do there in the summer time - winter might be a different case.

Negative: At check staff bombarded me with information. When a guest just arrives, often tired after a journey, this is too much. The most useful thing was not given to me till the second day when I asked about other restaurants-an English language map!Most information could be printed and read later by guest. It felt like I was at a school camp, especially when I had to lay out my own futons. Staff should do this. The staff never engaged me in conversation. No-one asked if I was enjoying my stay. I do speak some Japanese. It was very impersonal. It’s ridiculous that the only evening meal served costs almost Y5000! A snack is served between 10 and 11 pm! Who wants to eat so late! Thankfully I found the one cafe open just 5 minutes walk away. Lovely food, great atmosphere, friendly people. I spent most of my time there. The hotel is trying to be like a Swiss chalet but there is nothing inviting about the common area. How about some books and magazines? How about some little biscuits to go with the free tea/coffee?

Summary: A disappointing place to stay. Maybe in the ski season it makes more of an effort for its guests.

Positive: Beautiful location, a perfect little winter getaway. The facilities were clean and well-maintained. The outdoor private onsen was lovely. We were able to use it 2 times during our short stay without waiting at all. Staff were friendly and helpful, and some even spoke English. The breakfasts and dinners were delicious, and it was so nice to have those planned with the booking.

Negative: The futon mats for sleeping were not very comfortable, and rather thin.

Summary: Beautiful location, perfect little winter getaway.
